Hakkı Yeten
Biography
Hakkı Yeten, (1910 –1989) was the greatest Turkish player ever to play for Beşiktaş JK, which he also coached.
Yeten was born in Vodina, Bulgaria, then under Ottoman rule. His father, a major in the Ottoman Army moved his family of six children to Istanbul, settling in the Beşiktaş district when Yeten was only a year old. In 1914, Yeten's father was killed in the Battle of the Dardanelles.
He played football on the school team, and was soon discovered by Beşiktaş JK scouts. In 1931, Yeten dropped out of school to join the Black Eagles.
He played for Beşiktaş JK for 17 straight years, contributing to its numerous victories. As a team captain, he led Beşiktaş to 8 Istanbul League Championships, 3 Istanbul Cups, 1 Izmir International Fair Cup, 3 National League Championships, 1 Turkish Cup and 2 Prime Ministry Cups. Yeten was capped 3 times for the Turkish national football team. His fame eventually became international, and the English side Arsenal FC showed an interest in him. Yet, he opted to stay in Turkey. Yeten scored an amazing 382 goals in 439 games for the Black and Whites. He netted a club record 30 goals each against arch-rivals Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray. “The goal machine” quit active football in 1948 after fans hooted him during a match. After his retirement, he coached the Black Eagles for two seasons.
Yeten studied Law, graduating in 1937. He became a legal advisor for a state owned bank. He also served as Vice Chairman of the Turkish Football Federation, and acted as the President of Beşiktaş JK for three terms. "Baba" (Father) Hakkı was named the first honorary president of his club before his death on April 17, 1989 in Istanbul.
