Beşiktaş took an early lead just 12 minutes into the game, thanks to a brilliant free-kick from Jose Sosa. The home side recovered quickly and won a penalty at the 20th minute mark, but the keeper Tolga Zengin made a diving save to his left to prevent them from getting on the score-sheet. Then Kerim Frei’s slaloming solo effort in the 33rd minute gave the Eagles a comfortable 2-0 advantage for the first half.
 
Hoping to reduce the deficit, Rizespor staged a more attacking football in the second frame, but also left large gaps at the back. As a result, the Eagles found several chances to add to their tally, only to waste them one by one due to uncharacteristically poor finishing. Teddy pulled one back for the home side in the dying minutes, but Beşiktaş stood their ground to run out 2-1 winners.
