Roared on by a capacity home crowd, the Black Eagles opened the game with early pressure but almost saw the ball in their own net on 6 minutes. Tom De Sutter stole a back-pass from Beşiktaş defence and found himself in a one-on-one position with goalkeeper Tolga Zengin but failed to finish. The end-to-end game the teams played in the remainder of the first half produced no result.
A blistering Ramon Motta shot from outside the area gave Beşiktaş a 1-0 lead at the outset of the second half, but the Belgian visitors struck back with goals from Tom De Sutter, Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo (2) to run out 3-1 winners.
