Beşiktaş Mogaz’s strong start not enough to cool Barcelona

FC Barcelona vs. Beşiktaş Mogaz 35:25 (19:12)

Unlike their previous two Champions League outings, the visiting Black Eagles made a flying start into the game at the Palau Blaugrana, and thanks to a some solid goalkeeping from Yunus Özmusul, were up 4-3 after ten minutes, forcing an early Barcelona timeout. Following a nice pep talk from their coach, the Spaniards tightened up on defence and managed to pull ahead 8-4 within minutes. Unable to respond their hosts’ comeback and creating too many unforced turnovers that resulted in a flurry of goals by Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson, Beşiktaş Mogaz faced a 19-12 deficit at the interval.

Sitting on a comfortable lead, the host team kept the margin intact throughout the second half with goals from Jesper Noddespo and Nikola Karabatic but also showed some signs of easing off in the closing minutes. However, despite a series of goals by Erwin, Dacevic and Tolga Özbahar, the inexperienced Eagles, failed to take advantage of it, suffering their third loss in as many games.
