Spirited Eagles held to draw in season opener

Istanbul BBSK 1 - 1 Beşiktaş

With a brand new starting eleven of Cenk, Hilbert, İbrahim Toraman, Sivok, Uğur Boral, Veli, Hasan Türk, Fernandes, Olcay, Mustafa Pektemek and Almeida, the visiting Eagles caused the Büyükşehir defence plenty of problems early on and even had an excellent chance after 11 minutes, but a last-ditch tackle by Ekrem prevented Almeida from rolling the ball into the empty net. Despite occasional counter-attacks from the home side, revamped Beşiktaş enjoyed most of the possession the first half yet lacked that killer pass which would break the deadlock. The game remained goalless at the break.

Eagles started the second half with the same focus and enthusiasm they showed throughout the initial 45 minutes, only to find themselves unexpectedly a goal down at the 59th- minute mark. Cihan took advantage of poor marking following a Büyükşehir corner-kick and fired home from the far post to give the home side a 1-0 lead. The goal did not appear to knock Beşiktaş out of their stride as they were soon back on the job, pushing for the equaliser with a flurry of crosses into the Buyükşehir’s penalty area. However, to get their reward, the Eagles had to wait until 7 minutes before full-time when they finally levelled with a header from Almedia, off a well-placed free-kick by Fernandes. Beşiktaş pressed hard for a second goal in the remaining minutes but ran out of time as the teams shared the spoils with a goal a piece.
