Black and Whites started the better side and controlled the early pace, only to see the visitors pull ahead on 24 minutes through Brazilian midfielder Melo off a corner-kick. The goal, which looked offside, did not dispirit Besiktaş, but the cross-city rivals Galatasaray managed to hold onto their one-goal advantage going into the dressing room at the break. The Eagles chased the equaliser for much of the second half, but substitute Aydın put the game away for good with a 79th-minute strike.
