Beşiktaş Chairman Yıldırım Demirören made some important points during his opening address at BJK JK 2010 Ordinary Financial Meeting held at the Istanbul Lütfi Kırdar Convention and Exhibition Center today.
Following is an excerpt of his speech, which was frequently interrupted by applause:“I hope this meeting takes our club to new heights. Mr. Fahrettin Curoğlu and Ertunç Soğancıbey will fill you in with the necessary financial details, but I instead will try to update you on other current issues that surround our club. Before I go any further, I want everyone to know that my administration has redefined Beşiktaş’s mission and vision. Our new vision is to become a leading world club, and our mission is to promote our values, which are based on honesty, integrity and fairness, across borders. With your support, we can achieve all our goals mentioned here sooner than everyone expects. Believe me Beşiktaş has the capacity to make all these happen. But we must stand united until the end.
Dear Members,
If we can maintain spirit in common cause and work together, we can make the impossible possible. But this requires unity in its truest sense. I am sure we will come out this meeting united and reenergized to expand our efforts towards our goals.
Dear Members,
As I said before, we have put together a football team envied by all. Even the fans of other teams are showing up in our games to watch our international stars in person. Of course there is tinge of jealousy in the air. An article in Akşam newspaper by its Executive Editor İsmail Küçükkaya stated that in terms of having the best international stars, Beşiktaş had replaced Fenerbahçe. The following day, a number of columnists from other papers agreed with him and stressed that Beşiktaş had taken a giant step towards becoming a world-class team. From that day on, we have been unjustly attacked by our enemies on and off the pitch. But they will not prevent us from implementing our plans because we are no ordinary club.
Dear Members,
Despite our current place in the table, I can proudly say that we have created a dream team. We still have 14 matches to play, and anything can happen in these 14 weeks as long as the dirty tricks against us are not permitted to continue. We will wait and see how fair they are. I would like to thank everyone who helped us form this great team. As you all know, even at this late stage of the season, we are still fighting on 3 fronts. We are ranked 26th internationally, and our matches are being regularly aired in Europe, Asia and Americas. We have raised our bar and would like to see the other Turkish clubs do the same. They should stop blocking our way. In fact, they are impeding the development of Turkish football.
Allow me to pose some questions to Football Federation President Mahmut Özgener regarding his recent criticism of us. I know I am going to get a lot of heat for them, but I feel it is my duty to protect the interests of Beşiktaş and its 20 million strong fans.
How can you say there can be no democracy in Turkish football? Do you consider yourself a fascist living in a democratic country? The current performances of the national team and Central Board of Referees (MHK) are not up to the mark. What are you going to do to improve them, Mr. President? From our corner, you and Mr. Oğuz Sarvan, who is the Head of MHK, have failed to meet the aspirations of football lovers in this country. Mr. Sarvan has recently insulted to the 30 thousand at the Inonu Stadium last week. Have you ever thought of penalizing him and his referees? If you keep protecting the poor refereeing, the quality of football on the pitch will continue to deteriorate. You said you will penalize everyone who makes mistakes and comments. Do you consider penalizing yourself? Have you increased the penalties for poor refereeing? When a club chairman raided the referee’s dressing room to question his calls, you waited for nearly a month to penalize him; but when we complained about a sure goal, we got penalized the next day. Isn’t this a double-standard? It is obvious that you are favoring a certain team, whose name I will not mention here, over the others. How can an impartial person be at the top of Football Federation?
Your job requires you to be fair and impartial to all concerned but I am afraid you are none of it. I want all your answers in writing Mr President. I also want to remind you, like many others, one day you are going the leave your post, and if you don’t want to be remembered as an unfair President, don’t act like an ardent supporter of a certain club. Don’t forget, you are temporary but Beşiktaş is here to say.
Dear Members,
We’ve finally obtained building permit for our Inonu Stadium, which is worth many championships. My gratitude goes to everyone involved. We are well on the way and everything is moving as planned. The construction will get underway in May. With our renovated stadium, we’ll get closer to becoming a leading world team. The 42,000 seat stadium is going to be renovated with a build-operate-transfer model, whose tender is due in April. It also has 200 corporate-boxes.
I can hear the critics saying, “Mr. Chairman you are dreaming again.” But they said same thing for our Fulya Project which we successfully concluded few years back. They don’t realize that we are here to provide lasting facilities for our club. We are at the verge of adding a large free-lot to Beşiktaş’s portfolio. Its details will be made public shortly.
The city has issued the building permits for our new Şan Ökten Sports Facilities. The construction will commence soon. Here I would like thank Serdal and Şevki Adalı for their contributions in this project. I wish every Beşiktaş could contribute as much as they did.
Yes, dear members, as you just heard, we are working hard to take this club forward. We shall continue to do so as long as you support us. During our office term, no one is going to keep us from serving this club and we are not afraid of anyone. We may make mistakes along the way like we’ve done in the past, but I am sure you will give it to our excitement. I wish all of you a very good day.
