Beşiktaş Cola Turka Men’s Basketball moved to the semifinals of Spor Toto Turkish Cup with a 57-55 victory over Efes Pilsen at Kadir Has Sports Hall in Kayseri.
Rolling out a starting five of Serkan Erdoğan, Michal Ignerski, Mire Chatman, Cevher Özer and James Oglivy, the Eagles struggled to score at the beginning and managed a mere 5 points midway through the first quarter. In addition to its tight defense, Efes Pilsen found some good shots in the closing stages and closed out the opening frame with a 17-10 lead.Beşiktaş Cola Turka’s defense looked more livelier at the outset of the second, but the Black and White was still down by nine, 21-12, at the halfway point. Then Serhat Çetin teamed up with the newly-signed American Marcus Kemp and started to chip away at the deficit as the Eagles pulled within one, 23-22, with 3:05 to go in the first half. However a late spurt led by Sinan Güler and Nikola Vucic helped the blue and white team take a 32-24 advantage into the intermission.
Efes Pilsen opened the second half with back-to-back hoops, yet a string of jumpers by James Oglivy and Mire Chatman brought Beşiktaş Cola Turka back within three points, 36-33, with 6:10 to go in the third stanza. After Kerem Gönlüm and James Oglivy traded buckets, men in Black and White turned the heat on and surged ahead, 39-38, their first lead in the game, with 2:41 remaining on the clock. James Oglivy and Cevher Özer kept the pressure going with free throws, and it was 44-42 for the Eagles as the teams got to the fourth.
Mire Chatman drove to the hoop for a layup to start the final quarter and Marcus Kemp followed with consecutive jumpers from the perimeter as the Black and White extended the margin to eight, 53-45, with 3:10 left. However Efes refused to lay down its weapons down the stretch and came back to tie the score at 55-55 with 7 seconds to play. With fans holding their breath, the dying seconds saw James Oglivy make a clutch shot from the left wing that lifted Beşiktaş Cola Turka to a 57-55 victory.
