Beko Basketball League Week 17’s matchup saw visiting Beşiktaş Cola Turka falling 82-68 to Banvit on Saturday.
After Mutlu Pınar and Mire Chatman swapped buckets to start the opening quarter, the game turned into a low-scoring, up and down affair with Banvit on top, 9-7, at the halfway point. Despite a number of Cevher Özer jumpers, which leveled the scores several times, Banvit used the hot-shooting of Mutlu Akpınar and got some clutch baskets from İzzet Türkyılmaz and American Charles Davies in the closing minutes to take a 21-18 edge into the second stanza. At the outset of the second quarter, Banvit gave a good demonstration why it was amongst the League’s best, as it increased the margin to 10 points. The Eagles tried to erase the deficit with Cevher Özer’s jumpers but could not stop the orange-white-and-green from draining three pointers from allover the floor. After pushing the lead to double digits, 37-25, midway through the quarter, Banvit held on to it until the end of the first half and was comfortably up, 47-33, at the intermission.
Following Andrew Ogilvy’s opening layup, the Black and White, mounted a comeback to get back into it, only to see Banvit maintain its 14-point led thanks to a string of points by Lance Williams four minutes into the third quarter, 54-40. Then Michal Ignerski drilled a 28-foot three-pointer from left wing to bring Beşiktaş Cola Turka within 56-45 and prevent the home team from running away. Nevertheless, Mutlu Akpınar sparked a late Banvit surge that extended the lead to nineteen, 70-51, with one quarter to play.
Thanks to Hüseyin Beşok and Mıchal Ignerski, who finally began to assert themselves in the painted area, the Eagles put together a 7-0 spurt in the early going of the fourth as they clawed their way back to within 14 at 72-58 with 7:05 to go. But soon after Mutlu Akpınar ended the visitor’s streak with a long trey, Banvit regained control and took advantage of a series of Beşiktaş turnovers with back-to-back buckets by Lance Williams and Ismail Çevik to build the lead back to 19. The home side showed no mercy in the dying minutes as it cruised to an 82-68 victory.
