In Week 10 of the Turkish Volleyball League, visiting Beşiktaş Women’s Volleyball fell 3-1 to MKE Ankaragücü at TVF Başkent Sports Hall in Ankara.
Despite a sluggish start that saw them fall behind 4-0, the Lady Eagles recovered quickly and were down by only one point, 8-7, at the first technical timeout. But thanks to consecutive kills by Banu Toktamış, Müge Şakar and Kulikova, Ankaragücü began to dominate the game after the break and was up, 16-14, going into the second timeout en route to a comfortable 25-21 first-set victory.The teams matched each other point for point at the outset of the second, but the host Ankara City team managed to hold a narrow, 8-6, edge at the first timeout. From that point on, the Lady Eagles came alive, and the second technical timeout was called at 16-13 for Beşiktaş. Ankaragücü tried to rally back in the later stages only to witness strong blocking and smart attacking from Pelin Çelik, Sinem Barut and Kulikova that brought the set to the Black and White, 25-20, and tied the sets at one a piece.
MKE Ankaragücü opened the third set on a 5-0 run, but Banu Toktamış’s effective services reduced the gap to 8-5 at the first technical. Although powerful blocking by the Lady Eagles evened up the scores at 10 after the stoppage, the host still maintained a16-14 edge, entering the second technical timeout. Beşiktaş women’s volleyball team could not get its offence going rest of the way and lost the set 25-22.
The home team came out on fire in set number four, racing out to leads of 8-5 and 16-12 at the technical timeouts. Beşiktaş’s slow start to the set proved to great a deficit to overcome, and the Lady Eagles were never able to catch up with their host as they dropped the set 25-20 and the match 3-1.
