The Lady Eagles ended their shooting woes with jumpers by Yasemin Horasan and Iziane Marques, only to see Istanbul University match them basket for basket for the remainder of the quarter. Then, Mehtap Gezer hit a buzzer-beater fadeaway to give the host a 36-34 edge going into the locker room at the break.
The third stanza did not get underway on time due to a scoreboard failure. When the game resumed, Nykesha Sales and Bahar Yapar traded baskets to keep the score close until Howard’s three-pointer pushed Istanbul University’s advantage to 41-36 after two and half minutes. The rest of the stanza was a back and forth battle, with the home team clinging to a 55-53 lead after three quarters of play.
The early part of the fourth frame saw Istanbul University rally behind the hot-shooting duo of Mehtap Gezer and Bahar Yapar to stretch the margin back to 5 points, 61-56. But Beşiktaş Cola Turka would not let its host to pull away as Sales and Marques connected from outside and put their team in front by three, 68-65, with 3:05 to play, forcing Istanbul University to take an urgent timeout. The break in action did not stop the visitors surge because in ensuing play, Marques stole the ball from Howard and dashed for a layup, 70-65. The home team did everything in the book to erase the deficit down the stretch, but the Lady Eagles withstood all comeback attempts and held on for a 73-71 victory.
