Chairman Yıldırım Demirören brought to light some important facts about the Club on Beşiktaş TV, which went back on air today.
After spending the whole day with BJK TV staff, Mr. Demirören appeared on a live TV show at 7:30 pm. hosted by Tuğrul Yenidoğan. Accompanied by Deputy Chairman Alaattin Aykaç and Palmali Holding Chairman Mübariz Mansimov, he urged the Beşiktaş community to back the BJK TV. He first thanked Alaattin Aykaç and Mübariz Mansimov for their contributions and claimed that Beşiktaş was a new rising star in Turkish Football. He then reiterated his strong stand against piracy: “We are presently working together with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality to limit the unauthorized Beşiktaş merchandize in the market. I must admit, due to legal loopholes, it is a tiresome fight, but we are not giving in any way. For example, we had sold only 60 thousands official jerseys in 2008-09 season, in which we won the League title, but our sales have already exceeded 118 thousands this season, and we are still in mid-season. Something is got to be wrong. However, we cannot win this battle alone, the other clubs must join us in this war. If every young Beşiktaş fan spends $10 at our stores, think how much money we can make in a single year. It is a significant source of income no club can deny. Our biggest asset is our fans. They must report to us all these counterfeit and pirated merchandizes whenever they see one. If our fans become more conscious of this issue, our revenues will increase significantly.”
Yıldırım Demirören also gave us the latest on new Beşiktaş stadium: “With the endorsements of Prime Minister and Istanbul Mayor, our renovation project will be submitted to the High Council of Historical Monuments in a couple weeks for final approval. Then the entire nation will hear about it. Our State Minister Egemen Bağış also drew public’s attention to the urgency of the matter in a newspaper interview the other day. He has echoed our sentiment, as we expect to start the construction by May 2011. We will temporarily play our matches in a different venue. So far, everything is going according to our plan.
During this renovation period, we couldn’t be happier if we played our games in cities where there were no League teams because we would get a chance to increase the number of our fans. Unfortunately, the rules force us to stay Istanbul. We are strenuously working to take Beşiktaş to a level no Turkish team has ever been. This season, we’ve signed some big names from Europe and will make a strong run for all available titles. But our main goal is to build solid side for next season. If our new players can adjust to our system and settle in pretty fast, we’ll be a team envied by everyone. In any case, tomorrow is going to be much better for us than today.”
When the host asked him how long it would take to finish the new stadium, the Chairman replied, “Once the legal procedures are over, we will probably complete the project in 24 months.” He then added: “As you might have already heard, the project is originally based on build- operate-transfer model, and we have already a sponsor, who is eager to undertake the job. Using our own resources is another option. According to our initial estimates, it is going to us somewhere between $ 45-50 million. We have not made up our minds about which one to endorse yet. Nevertheless, it will be a state-of-art stadium that can empty in 20 minutes.
Asked about his expectations from Beşiktaş’s tomorrow match against Bucaspor, Demirören said, “To tell you the truth, staring from tomorrow, this team have set their eyes on breaking the Club’s previous 12 games winning streak. I am confidant they will perform like a true contender and fight to the end. We may experience some bad luck along the way. But it should not deter us from taking concrete steps forward. I am sure after couple of matches our fans will start agreeing with me. ”
The Chairman wrapped it up by stressing the importance of keeping BJK TV going, “BJK TV and our official website are valuable resources for true facts and information about Beşiktaş. They also constitute platforms that inspire and bring us together so we must support them in any way we can.”
