In its fifth Eurocup Group B game, visiting Beşiktaş Cola Turka Men’s Basketball suffered a dramatic 101-100 overtime loss to Hemofarm Stada of Serbia last night.
The Black Eagles got off to a hot start and used the hot shooting of Mire Chatman to take an early 5-point lead. They preserved that margin until the end of first, 25-20, with Chatman chipping in 14 points. At the outset of the second quarter, Savovic nailed two consecutive jumpers that brought the Serbians to within one, 25-24. From that point on, the game turned into slugfest with the lead changing hands until the buzzer. While a flurry of layups by Likholitov carried the load for Beşiktaş Cola Turka, Savovic kept Hemofarm close with short jumpers. The teams were locked in a dead-heat entering the final minute of the first half, but Mire Chatman hit buzzer-beater to give the Eagles a two-point edge, 47-45, at the break. Chatman scored 24 points for the Black and White in the first 20 minutes, followed by Likholitov, who poured in 10.
After Serhat Çetin converted a layup to open the third, the Eagles clogged the middle and started playing better defense. But their scoring touch also seemed to abandon them as they struggled badly at the other end. Although the home team established a 5-point advantage with time running out on the clock, Ignerski stepped up and knocked down two three-pointers as the quarter ended 71-70 in favor of Beşiktaş Cola Turka.
The final stanza was an exciting thriller for both sides with Mira Chatman catching fire from start to finish. After losing top-rebounder Likholitov to five fouls early on, the Eagles had no other choice but to rely on Chatman to run the show as he made a ton of baskets off home team’s turnovers, which resulted in easy put-backs and running one-handers in the lane. Despite Chatman’s buckets, the score still remained tight, and it was only 80-79 for the Eagles midway through the quarter. Backed by a boisterous home crowd, Hemofarm Stada bounced back to take an 84-82 lead with 3:05 to play. The teams tried everything down the stretch to change the course of the battle but instead were knotted in an 89-89 tie, entering the dying seconds. When, Hemofarm’s final shot fell short, the game went into overtime.
The Black and Whites started the overtime with a three-pointer by İsmail Çevik and rode the hot hand of Chatman to carry a 96-95 edge into the final minute that turned out to be free throw shooting duel. With 25 second showing on the scoreboard, Pavkoviç buried two free throws to pull the Serbians ahead, 99-98. Few seconds later, Chatman responded with his own free throws and put Beşiktaş Cola Turka back on top, 100-99. Then, it was Pavloviç’s turn to convert another pair of free throws, 101-100. But when İsmail Çevik’s last-second shot bounced off the rim and did not drop in, it was all over for the Eagles as the Serbians went wild with the win.
While Mira Chatman finished with a game-high 43 points, Ignerski (19), Serhat Çetin (12), Likholitov (10), Cevher Özer (6), Oglivy (4), Bekir Yarangüme (3), İsmail Çevik (3) all contributed to offensive effort of Beşiktaş.
