The Black Eagles qualified for next round of Europa League with a 2-1 away win over CSKA Sofia. The Black and Whites’ goals were scored by Zapotocny and Holosko in the second half.
The match at the Vasil Levski Stadium in Sofia City was refereed by Tom Harald Hagen of Norwegian Football Federation, and a vocal group of travelling Beşiktaş fans cheered their team on throughout the entire game. The match started off at a slow pace with neither side willing to take any risks and stayed that way until the end of the first half. Beşiktaş’s only serious attack came from Ernst in the 13th minute, but CSKA Sofia keeper M’ Bolhi made a spectacular save on his shot to deny him the goal. The Bulgarians created a couple of good changes in the closing minutes but failed to beat Beşiktaş’s young keeper Cenk Gönen, who put in another outstanding effort in goal. The teams went into dressing room with a clean sheet.Beşiktaş Manager Schuster brought on Ali Kuçik and keeper Hakan Arıkan for Nobre and the injured Cenk Gönen after the restart. The early part of the second half was a replica of the first with the game bogged down in midfield. During this time the sides relied mostly on defence rather than offence However, as match moved on, the Eagles started dictating the tempo to turn the game around, and they got their reward when defender Zapotny headed home Guti’s perfect free-kick on 59th minutes. After the goal, CSKA sent everyone forward in search of a quick equaliser but left the defence a little thin at the back as Beşiktaş did not too long to capitalise. Substitute Ali Kuçik stole the ball from keeper M’Bolhi few minutes later and passed it to unmarked Holosko who buried it into the open to make it 2-0 for the Eagles. It was also Beşiktaş’s 100th goal in the UEFA cup matches. CSKA managed to reduce the deficit to one goal through Sheridan after 78 minutes, but the Black and White held on for the remainder of the match to secure a fine 2-1 victory.
With this win, the Eagles who still have a game at hand, advances to the second round of Europa League together with Porto. Beşiktaş’s final group match is against Rapid Wien in Istanbul on December 15.
