In a Ziraat Bank Turkish Cup qualifier that went to extra-time, Beşiktaş thumped visitors Mersin İdman Yurdu 3-0 at the Fiyapı Inonu Stadium to advance to the groups phase.
Playing under heavy rain, the second division outfit Mersin accepted the Eagles’s dominance from the kick-off and, keeping their defence crowded, relied solely on occasional counterattacks. Despite being swamped by the visitor’s backline, Beşiktaş came close to breaking the deadlock on several occasions in the first half but could not beat keeper Eser Altın, who excelled in the goal with a string of superb saves. The visitors from Southern Tukey proved to be a tough nut to crack as they held the Black and White to a goalless draw at the interval. The second half was a replica of the first with Beşiktaş running the show, yet unable to overcome the dogged Mersin resistance. As the match moved on, the Eagles’ Manager Bernd Shuster played his last cards and sent in Holosko, Necip Uysal and young Onur Bayramoğlu for Fink, Fatih Tekke and Yusuf Şimşek to provide fresh legs upfront but to no avail. Nevertheless, when Hasan Üçüncü got sent off with his second yellow in the 85th minute, shorthanded Mersin defence began to waver against the relentless Beşiktaş onslaught and left everything into the good hands of their keeper. The closing minutes saw the Eagles camp inside the Mersin penalty area, shooting everywhere but the net as the match went into extra-time.
The unstoppable momentum of the Eagles would finally bear its fruit on 100 minutes when Guti unleashed home a powerful drive that was deflected off a defender, freezing the man-of-the match Eser Altın and giving Beşiktaş a 1-0 edge. While Mersin İdman Yurdu were still reeling from the goal, Bobo extended the home side’s lead two minutes later with sliding finish to the right part of the net from 5 yards out. The same Bobo powered a diving header into far corner in the 114th minute to close the scoring for the night and help his club qualify for the group phase of the Ziraat Bank Turkish Cup.
