Cross-town rivals Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş battled to a 1-1 draw in Kadiköy on Day 5 of the Turkish Spor Toto Super League.
Teams observed a one-minute silence in memory of former President of Turkish Football federation Halim Çorbalı, who passed away midweek, before the kickoff. The Black Eagles applied all the early pressure with strong presence in the midfield and both flanks. In a position, which would later be called back for offside, Qurasesma’s hard effort hit the post and went out. In the mean time, a dogged Beşiktaş defence kept any chances from Fenerbahçe to a minimum. But ironically, it was to be the home side who would score first. Niang put the yellow and navy blue in front during a 26th-minute goal-mouth melee. It appeared Lugana fouled the Beşiktaş defender İsmail Köybaşı in that position, but referee Cüneyt Çakır had missed the call. Right after the shocking goal, the Black and White’s right fullback sustained a leg injury and had to be replaced by İbrahim Üzülmez. Then a spectacular aerial collision between Üzülmez and the Eagles’s keeper Hakan Arıkan forced the keeper to leave the game with a head injury on 38 minutes. These back-to-back misfortunes shifted the momentum in favour of Fenerbahçe as they kept on coming for the second to make the matters safe. Luckily, the Eagles’ defence held their ground, and it was only 1-0 for the home side at the half.
After the interval, there was an entirely different Beşiktaş on the pitch, as the Black and Whites, led by Quaresma, came out their comatose state and began pushing to restore parity with dangerous crosses from all sides. A 70th-minute Bobo-Aurelio substitution paid big dividends for the visitors when Fenerbahçe keeper Volkan Demirel brought down the substitute Brazilian inside the box, and Beşiktaş were awarded a penalty just 4 minutes before the full time. Guti converted his shot to close the scoring at the Istanbul derby and help his side to a valuable away point.
