Beşiktaş Men’s Handball Team won the first-ever Turkish Super Cup with a hard-fought 27-23 victory over Izmir Metropolitan Municipality at the Eskişehir Porsuk Sports Hall.
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality came charging out of the gates and stormed to a 2-0 lead thanks to two quick goals by Özgür and Şenol, only to see the Eagles fought back to take a 3-2 lead. Then the Black and White tightened up on defence and stretched that lead to 8-4 on a series of fast-break goals from Ramazan and Bülent at the half way mark of the first half. The teams traded a number of goals from there on but, playing an aggressive defence that would give away very few chances to İzmir City team, the Eagles went on to build a 16-11 cushion, going into the dressing room at the intermission. The Black and White did not push too hard after the restart and enjoyed their five-goal advantage with lacklustre play on both ends. Apparently they relaxed too soon; because Izmir Metropolitan Municipality managed to trim the deficit to 2 goals at 22-20 entering the final 10 minutes. However, determined to lift the Super Cup which was being organized in Turkey for the first time at all costs, the Eagles recovered quickly and got a number of clutch goals from Ramazan, Oleksandr and Victor down the stretch to walk away with a valuable 27-23 win.
