On Day 2 of the Turkish Spor Toto Super League, the Eagles suffered a 2-0 home loss to Büyükşehir Belediyespor at the BJK Inonu Stadium last night.
A purposeful start by the Black and White saw them almost take the lead within few minutes of the referee Fırat Aydınus’s starting whistle, but Quaresma and Nihat Kahveci both failed to find the mark. The Eagles kept pouring it on for the entire first half with dangerous attacks from both flanks initiated by Quaresma and Hilbert. In an unnecessary rush to break the deadlock, they occasionally lost the ball upfront and faced swift counter-attacks from the visitors, but Beşiktaş defence stood their ground as the teams carried a clean sheet into the half-time break. The second half did not differ much from the first with the Eagles fighting hard for the lead, this time with long balls through the middle. But ironically, it was Büyükşehir Belediyespor who would score the opener. Iskender Alın collected a lobbed pass thrown behind the Beşiktaş defence; beat defender Ferrari with a nifty move and struck the ball well to put his team a goal up on 57 minutes. Soon after this unexpected goal, Schuster changed his hands by bringing on forward-minded subs Guti, Tabata and Nobre for Delgado, Hilbert and Nihat Kahveci in search of a quick equaliser. From then on, the Black Eagles attacked ferociously, but poor execution and a superb goalkeeping by Büyükşehir keeper Hasagiç denied them that much-needed goal. Sending everyone forward, they also left wide gaps at the back. Beşiktaş would pay dearly for those defensive lapses when visitors’ striker İbrahim Akın controlled a through-ball in the final minute of regulation and rounded Beşiktaş’s reserve keeper Cenk Gönen to further orange and navy blue’s lead with a light tap into a wide open net. There was to be no scoring in the remaining minutes and the Büyükşehir Belediyespor ran out 2-0 winners.
