Hakan Arıkan: “I gained my confidence back”

Beşiktaş’s successful reserve goalkeeper Hakan Arıkan reflected on his recent performance for the press:

“Our Champions League tie against Liverpool in England was definitely the worst one of my career. After failing to stop so many goals, I needed some serious psychological help to get back on tract and continue. But it also turned out to be a valuable lesson for me; I learned a lot from it. Right after that unfortunate night, I’ve worked day and night not to repeat the same mistakes. Good thing, the whole thing collapsed in one single game and was not repeated bit by bit in every other match. I’ve learned to play with more concentration, which has upgraded my performance. After watching that match over and over, I’ve worked on my weak points and done everything to improve them. In a way, that match changed the course of my playing career and made a much better keeper out of me. I’ve started this season with a lot more confidence. After a couple of matches, I felt comfortable out there and realized that I gained my old confidence back. If a keeper has sufficient confidence in the goal, he surely plays better. I thank everyone who has helped me get through those difficult times. Our fans have great expectations of us this season. We’ll do everything in our power to fulfill their dreams.
There was an enormous fan support in our game against the Czech team at the Inonu Stadium last week. If they can keep it up game in and game out, we’ll be in different places at the end of the season.”
