Remarks by Demirören and Schuster

In a joint press conference held at the Eagles’ campground in Austria, Beşiktaş Chairman Yıldırım Demirören and Manager Schuster answered the questions posed by the reporters.

In reference to the interest shown by Ozan İpek, Bursaspor’s flashy midfielder, “There is nothing new with what he has said. Every player wants to play for Beşiktaş, because we are one of the greatest teams in this country.  Unfortunately, our roster is full at the moment. We will act according to Mr. Schuster’s camp report. The demand for our current players is also high, so we have room to make few trades before the deadline, but we will wait until July 9 when we return from Austria. If our manager requests additional players, then we may open a new chapter for extra transfers. In any case, we are not going to bring in any more superstars this season, because we are running on a tight budget,” responded Mr. Demirören.
When queried about the recent comments of Fenerbahçe Chairman, who also heads the Turkish Clubs Association, Beşiktaş Chairman expressed his frustrations, “It is sad to see someone in authority, who is supposed to be impartial, bypass us and get into polemics with our own players. I regard the whole thing as inappropriate interference in our internal affairs, and I don’t think I’ll take part in Association’s meetings from now on.”
Yıldırım Demirören continued, “We have no time for such petty politics. At present, we are fully focused on our latest project, the renovation of BJK Inonu Stadium. We are planning to submit our plans to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality by the end of August and expecting a quick approval. When completed this project will be landmark in our club’s history.”

He went on to reiterate the Black and White’s goals for the upcoming season, “This season, we’ll be battling in three fronts, two at home, one in Europe, and we intend to go all the way. This is not an easy task to accomplish, but as a big club, we should not be settling for less.”
Mr.Demiören also clarified Azerbaijani businessman Mansinov’s relation with the club, “Mr. Mansinov had contributed to Beşiktaş TV, and we thanked him for it but played no part in this season’s transfers. Here I’d like to point out that our board members are elected not for their money but for their merits.”

In response to a question about the newly signed Quaresma, “Nearly 22 thousand showed up for his signing ceremony at the BJK Inonu Stadium, and he is well aware of the expectations but needs time like everyone else. For his transfer, our Vice-Chairman and Head of Football Committee Serdar Adalı and Committee Member Cengiz Zülfikaroğlu went abroad several times and managed to sign him for just Euro 7.3 million. He was worth Euro 30 million the previous year. He will not only be a great asset to our team but serve as role model to all young Turkish players. In the meantime, we must all stick together like a big family and stand behind this team. Otherwise, we may end up making a slow start into the season similar to last year. If we didn’t drop so many points in the first 6 games of the past season, we could’ve won the championship by at least 10 points right now,” replied the Chairman.
Yıldırım Demirören ended his words by revealing that despite the football team’s disappointing showing, he never thought of resigning last season but learned greatly from his mistakes, “From here, as Chairman of Beşiktaş, I promise to our fans; we are not going to repeat the mistakes we made last season. Our club members have shown how much they believe in us by re-electing us to another term. Since our time expires by 2013, we have no time to argue over petty things. It’s time to move forward in unity.”

Following the Chairman, Beşiktaş’s new Manager Bernd Schuster addressed the questions directed at him, “I will announce the players who are not going to be with us next season after the two exhibition matches we play this week. I am going to be fair and give everyone an equal chance to prove himself. There is a real competition out there, so it is not going to be an easy decision to make. At the moment, I am quite happy with my players’ pre-season performance. In general, it takes awhile to get the German and Spanish players going in pre-season training, but here the situation is different. I’ve never seen a team so motivated in a pre-season camp like Beşiktaş before. It is quite extraordinary. If we can carry this momentum into the season, no one will able to stand in our way. We want to repeat what this team achieved two seasons ago and become a double cup winner again. But we have to be successful in Europe as well.
The German Manager then filled the reporters in on the details of Beşiktaş’s training, “We are practicing twice a day. After two weeks of physical conditioning, we are now concentrating on various game tactics. We are in line with our pre-season program. Our training sessions are fun and get every player involved from start to finish. The performances of our players indicate that we will be ready by the time we play our first UEFA Europa League match. I am planning to keep a couple of young players on our roster because they are really talented and have star quality. As I’ve said before, I am an advocate of offensive football, but look at the current World Cup matches! Having two many forwards on your lineup doesn’t make you win games. Just like midfielders, they have to turn defensive and press after losing the ball. This means we will play with a lot of attacking midfielders this season, and our current strikers Bobo and Nobre will implement the same tactic when they are on the pitch.”
When asked about his views on Beşiktaş’s new transfer Quaresma, Schuster added, “He is definitely a superstar and knows what the fans expect of him. He is working hard to meet these expectations. Although he has a lot of responsibilities to shoulder, I am sure he will raise the quality of Turkish league this season.
At the end of the meeting, Beşiktaş Manager disclosed that he was receiving formation from the former Assistant Manager Tayfur Havutçu about the team but did not have a chance to meet former Manager Mustafa Denizli in person, something he would like to do when he returned to Istanbul.
