Beşiktaş 1 – 1 Neftçi Baku

Strengthened by the newcomers Quaresma and Hilbert, the Black Eagles were held to a one-all draw by the Azerbaijani side Neftçi Baku in their first match of the pre-season. The Black and Whites’ only goal came from Erkan Kaş in the 83rd minute.

Beşiktaş’s pre-season opener under the new Manager Bernd Schuster took place at the Bischofshofen Stadium in Austria before a large and boisterous expatriate crowd, who cheered the Eagles on throughout the match.
Kicking off with a starting lineup consisting of Rüştü Reçber, Erkam Reşmen, Ibrahim Toraman, Zapotochny, Ismail Köybaşı, Fink, Uğur İnceman, Ali Küçik, Tabata, Quaresma and Nobre, the Eagles took command from the opening whistle as they forced the Azerbaijanis deep into their own half.
The pressure almost paid its dividend at the 22:00 mark, but Beşiktaş’s German midfielder Fink failed to re-direct the ball coming off a corner into the net. A minute later, Neftçi Baku went 1-0 up through Abishev. The Black and White came close to equalising after 27 minutes, but Tabata’s free-kick hit the crossbar and went out. The Azerbaijanis took a one-goal advantage into the half. The newly signed Portuguese star Quaresma, who dazzled the spectators with some nifty ball control and passes, was definitely the best player on the pitch in the first half.
The Black and White started the second half with a new lineup of Hakan Arıkan, İbrahim Üzülmez, Delgado, Ferrari, Sivok, Erhan Güven, Ernst, Nihat Kahveci, Hilbert, Erkan Kaş and Bobo.
This half saw the long-term injured player Delgado put in impressive performance, as his 55th minute effort just missed the net. Another player who drew sustained applause from the fans was veteran striker Nihat Kahveci.
Punishing attacks by Beşiktaş went on to bear fruits 7:00 from time when young Erkan Kaş brought the teams back on level terms with a superb finish. The Eagles searched for another one in the remaining minutes, but Baku defence bravely stood their ground. The teams walked off the pitch locked in a 1-1 draw.
