Schuster’s First Press Meeting

After arriving in Istanbul with his assistants, Beşiktaş’s new Manager Bernhard Schuster gave his first impressions of Turkey and narrated the story behind his transfer in his first press conference.

Following the welcoming party at the Atatürk Airport Mr. Schuster was taken to Swissotel where he had lunch with Beşiktaş Chairman Yıldırım Demirören, Vice-Chairman and Head of Football Committee Serdal Adalı, Spokesperson, Football Committee and Board Member Responsible for Communications Prof. Dr. Mete Düren and Football Committee Member Cengiz Zülfikaroğlu.
After the lunch, Beşiktaş’s new Manager held his first press in Turkey and answered the questions directed at him.
When asked about the reception at the airport, “It was first class. This kind of warm welcoming can only happen in Turkey. I wasn’t expecting such an atmosphere.  I was deeply honored and moved. I felt real special.” replied the internationally acclaimed German Coach.
He then went on to dispel the rumors about his transfer to Beşiktaş:
“Since last moth, various rumors had been circulating both in Turkish and German sports media about my coming to Beşiktaş. They were not true because Beşiktaş contacted my manager through Mr. Ahmet Bulut only last week. We all got together in Spain 4 days ago and started negotiating which lasted couple days. Whole thing concluded last week not last month as some claimed.”
When queried about the Portuguese midfielder Ricardo Quaresma’s transfer to Beşiktaş, the German was all smiles:
“Quaresma is an international star who has proven himself more than once. He is known all over the world. Just look at the teams he played for! Every coach wants to have players like him. I know Beşiktaş paid a handsome amount to acquire him, but I am sure he will deserve every penny spent on him during our upcoming matches. Players like him make our job easier. I think he will be a great asset for Beşiktaş next season. His transfer to Beşiktaş was definitely a wise move. ”
In regard to his role for bringing German player Hilbert to Beşiktaş, Schuster explained, “Beşiktaş has been talking to Hilbert way before me. Therefore, I have nothing to do with his transfer to Beşiktaş. I know him from Stuttgart. He is a versatile player and I would like to see him on our roster.”
