Beşiktaş Manager Mustafa Denizli weighed in on the Black and White’s 1-0 loss after the match:
“I must admit, tonight’s loss is huge setback for our title hopes. We were planning to stay close to top until our upcoming match against the league leaders Bursaspor, but our championship ambitions suffered a big blow tonight.Sometimes things do not work out as the way you planned. Despite the early goal, we had enough chances in the second half to win this match comfortably. Unfortunately the football gods were not on our side in this one.
I don’t like to talk about the referees, but tonight’s officiating was in one word: terrible, and in many occasions they lacked the necessary courage to make the right calls. The referees should watch the replay of this match and see how bad their calls were. It sure takes courage to be a good ref, without it you are no different than the ball boys.
In our previous league match, referees missed out on our last-minute penalty. Including the two linesmen, there were four officials on the pitch in that game. In contrast to millions of viewers, if they cannot call an obvious penalty, something is got be wrong. They are either under great pressure or there is some secret scheme against Beşiktaş. The Referees Committee should urgently look into these matters before it is too late. We are tired of seeing the same play year after year.
Ironically, during our midweek practise, Bobo worked on his penalty shots, and I still don’t understand how he missed that one. Unlucky is the word. Otherwise, he is the best penalty taker in our team. As I said, some days things don’t go in your way, and you need all the luck you can get.
Tonight is definitely one of the saddest days of my coaching career. Despite the early goal, we should have comeback in the second half as we have done several times in the past. If we could only play half of our usual offensive game, the score would’ve been quite different right now. I know I am repeating myself but the poor officiating had seriously hindered our performance tonight. Besides Fenerbahçe, we had to beat the referees as well.
Every time we made a decent tackle, we got a harsh call and were penalized with a yellow card, but our opponent received nothing in similar situations. There was a huge double standard on the pitch tonight. They should watch the replay of this match, and they should watch it carefully. It can be text book case for the new referees.
Of course, we made some mistakes during the match. They should be regarded as normal when you are playing in Kadiköy. For an away team, the pressure is extremely high here. Some of our foreign players were seriously affected by it and could not perform as well as we expected them to. As a result, our forward line did not look too creative out there tonight.
A win here would book us a ticket to Europe next season but we still enough matches left to achieve that goal. In order not to put our Champions League hopes in jeopardy, we must get back on tract as soon as possible.”
