Beşiktaş Cola Turka 74, OYAK Renault 82

Beşiktaş Cola Turka Men’s Basketball suffered an 82-74 upset to the visiting OYAK Renault in a Week 23 game at Akatlar Cola Turka Arena.

While the Black Eagles had trouble finding their offensive rhythm, OYAK Renault started hot and raced to an 11-2 lead after three minutes. Thanks to an excellent shooting performance from the 3-point range and solid defense, the black and yellow visitors maintained that edge throughout the quarter. They were up, 13-8, heading into the second.
Riding the scoring of Haluk Yıldırım and Cevher Özer, the Black and White took advantage of a temporary injury to the OYAK Renault’s top rebounder Heytwelt and tied the game at 13 with 7:10 remaining on the clock before jumping ahead 19-18 a minute later. But after Heytwelt’s return, the visitors began to dominate the boards again; and a string of jumpers by Scales knotted the game at 35 entering the final minute. Then, a last-second layup from Heytwelt gave OYAK Renault a one-point, 37-35, advantage at the half.
The first part of the third quarter continued to be a tight affair with the teams battling to a 49-49 tie at the halfway mark. However, from that point on, a tenacious defense put up by the Bursa City team kept Beşiktaş Cola Turka, one of league’s top scoring teams, away from the basket for the remainder of the stanza. In the closing minutes, Scales, Famumiti and Ufuk combined for consecutive layups to build a 15-point, 66-51 cushion for OYAK Renault with one quarter to play.

At the onset of the fourth, in an attempt to narrow the margin and get back into the game, Beşiktaş Cola Turka turned to zone-defense but could not contain the hot-shooting duo of Scales and Ahmet as the gap ballooned to 22 points, 77-55, midway through the quarter. Playing without injured players Baxter and Perry, the Black and White refused to give up and rallied back behind the scoring of Kerem and Haluk to bring the deficit down to 3 points at 77-74 with a couple minutes left. But OYAK Renault managed to hang on and walk away with a hotly-contested 82-74 victory. Absence of Baxter and Perry influenced the game of Beşiktaş adversely.
