Mustafa Denizli’s Quotes

After the CSKA Moscow match, Beşiktaş Manager Mustafa Denizli assessed his team’s performance:

“Manchester United were the uncontested favorites in this group, but we managed to beat them on their home ground. We also picked up a point away to Wolsburg. All our points came from away matches. If we did a little better at home, we would be in a different place by now. We had plenty of opportunities to score at home except the match against Wolfsburg, but couldn’t capitalize on them. They had 3 or 4 clear-cut chances all night long and scored 2 goals. I think the turning point of this match was Tello’s position. If we scored a goal in that position, we would be talking different things right now. We played a cautious football in the first half and tried to take control in midfield. After falling behind late in the first half, we pressed for the equalizer in the second half and created a flurry of chances from crosses.
Fans appreciated our performance tonight because we all played our hearts out. But scoring goals is the name of the game. We could collect 7 points in this group but sometimes you need all the luck you can get.
It’s too hard to create plenty of goal chances in Champions League. The maximum amount of goal chances you may have is 4 or 5 in home and away matches.
I don’t recall any player who didn’t try his very best. Our players may change, but our game plan and mentality always stay the same and that’s what happened in this match. CSKA is a formidable side and it was the early goal that changed the destiny of this match.”
