After the game, Beşiktaş Technical Director Mustafa Denizli reflected on his team’s performance against Manchester United.
“After the 70th minute, I felt like the match was petering out into a goalless draw and neither side would be able to score. As an experienced coach, I am usually right on my predictions, but tonight was an exception. An unexpected defensive lapse cost us the game. It is sad too see all our efforts go down the drain. I also think that we played a really good game and went head-to-head with the past two season’s Champions League finalist until the final whistle. I feel sorry for my players because they deserved at least a point from this evenly played match. With a little bit luck and extra effort we could’ve made them and our fans happy. It would also boost our morale in our upcoming games. But this is football; sometimes the least expected thing can happen and catch you off guard. As far as I recall, most of their attacks came from the balls we gave away coming out of our own end. If we want to qualify from this group, we need to minimize this type of poor defensive passing, before they cause us any further damage. All in all, I am satisfied with our performance, and with some adjustments, we’ll get better as the season moves along.Coming into this game, no one was giving us any chance, but tonight, we showed the world that we belonged to Champions League and could beat any team on a given date out there regardless of who that might be. We’ve also offered some signs of coming out our current slump. I am sure our tonight’s performance will have positive impact on our future league matches. During my two seasons with the club, I’ve never lost my confidence in this team. We’ve dropped many unexpected points along the road; but we’ve always managed to bounce back and make up for them. We are going to do the same after this game; but it is still a sad day for Turkish Football.
