Post-Match Quotes from Mustafa Denizli

Following the Gaziantepspor match that ended in a 0-0 draw, Beşiktaş Technical Director Mustafa Denizli commented on his team’s performance:

“As you all witnessed, tonight we did everything out there, except score goals. We launched numerous attacks from both flanks and threatened constantly through the middle but still came away empty-handed. All match stats will prove that we‘ve deserved to win this game and deserved to win it by a good margin. Unfortunately, not being able to find net despite outplaying your opponent happens all the time in football. I must admit we weren’t expecting to drop any points in this game because we were really geared up for the victory.
We wasted some of our chances due to poor execution; others were saved by the keeper, who undeniably put in his best performance this season. Yes, we are all disappointed with the result; however, this is all part of the game and we still have enough time to improve. Although, with the addition of our Champions League games, our schedule for coming weeks will get much tougher, we will continue to play an attacking style football, regardless of who our opponent will be. This new system is a bit different than last year and will get better as we move along.
I agree that Nihat and Tello played way below their capacity tonight; but if you believe in their overall quality, you should do everything to keep them in the game because you never know when they are going to get you on the scoreboard. Both have proven time after time that they have killer instincts to score. If you take them out too early, you may be hindering your offensive output. Nihat needs a bit more time to deliver, he is too anxious to win fans’ hearts; so he is rushing his positions a little. But let’s not forget he has been proven top scorer in Europe for quite some. Once he gains his confidence, we will see a more productive Nihat out there. Most fans did not like my move to substitute Fabian Ernst with Uğur but I had to take Fabian out because he was exhausted.”
When asked about his assessment of the Champions League group-stage draw, Denizli replied:

“We are in a difficult group. Manchester United seems to be the favorite on paper but nothing is for sure yet. We are not afraid of them in any way and will play offensive football in both games. We hope to get our offense back on tract until our Champions League opener against them and show them what we are truly made of. Since we are as powerful as the remaining two teams, I think any team can beat the other in this group. If we can win all our home games, we can qualify from this group. But we have to develop a new strategy for each game. We have 15 days left until our home fixture with Manchester United, and we are going to make use of this period to be in top shape when we play them.”
