Our Black and White hosted Gaziantepspor at BJK İnönü Stadium in the opening game of Turkcell Super League Matchday 4, and the game ended in a 0-0 draw.
After a 95-day separation, the Black Eagles were back in action at Inönü Stadium last night—their first appearance in front of the home crowd since last season. In a brief ceremony held before the kickoff, the Turkish Red Crescent thanked Beşiktaş for their ongoing support. The game started with both sides intent on playing attacking football, and it was the visiting Gaziantepspor that created the first opportunity just after three minutes when Julio Cesar’s neat shot on the run was well saved by keeper Hakan Arıkan. Striker Nihat Kahveci got into a promising position in the ensuing Beşiktaş attack, but his cross from the left flank was cleared by the visitors’ keeper Mahmut before a Black and White foot could get on the end of it. Since both teams looked eager to score first, chances were created at either end with some pretty good football at times. However, from the 25th minute onwards, the Eagles began to exert their authority and managed to force their way through Gaziantepspor’s defense. Thanks to a furry of late opportunities, they came close to scoring on numerous occasions but were unable to cash in on them. After Nihat’s effort from 20 yards out hit the right post, Beşiktaş mesmerized the visitors’ defense with jinking runs and silky skills but just could not convert them into goals. Since the closing minutes saw Black and White place the ball everywhere but into the net, they found themselves knotted in a scoreless tie at the break.
Teams carried the faced-paced momentum of the first half into the second, but cheered on by the home crowd, the Black and White continued to hold the upper hand, especially with powerful drives from outside the box; as a pair of fierce shots by Nihat and Fink went inches wide. Despite the relentless pressure, the Black Eagles were unable to overcome the stubborn defense of the visitors and their keeper Mahmut, whose saves prevented the home side from breaking the deadlock. After the 70th –minute mark, Beşiktaş brought on Ekrem Dağ, Mert Nobre and Uğur İnceman for İbrahim Kaş, Serdar Özkan and Ernst to provide more scoring punch upfront. However, as the game progressed, Gaziantepspor gained in confidence to push forward more often, and the game turned into an up-and down offensive battle with little time spent in the middle of the park but no score. During the 7-minute stoppage time, the Blank and White launched a last-ditch effort to steal the show but could not get one past the Gaziantepspor’s keeper. The fate of the game was sealed when Ekrem’s late screamer skipped off the crossbar and went over for a goal kick; as the sides settled for a point each after a hard-fought match.
