Our visiting Black Eagles were held to a 1-1 tie by the host Istanbul Büyükşehir Belediye in the opening match of the 2009-10 Turkish football season. Michael Fink had the lone goal for the Black and White in the 29th minute.
The season opener, refereed by Tolga Özkalfa, took place at the Ataturk Olympics Stadium, in front of a vocal crowd of Beşiktaş fans who cheered non-stop for the entire 90 minutes. The early minutes were played out mainly in midfield with no real chances of note; but as the game progressed, the Black and White began to get grip on the game by launching dangerous looking attacks from both wings. The pressure paid off on 29 minutes when Nobre found unmarked Fink outside the box with a well-placed header. After controlling the ball with clean touch, the German midfielder sent a bullet to the lower corner of the net from 20 yards out to put the Black Eagles 1-0 up and score the first goal of the new season at the same time. But two minutes later, İbrahim Akın equalized for the Istanbul Büyükşehir, and the teams headed into the locker room with a 1-1 tie at the break.
Beşiktaş Technical Director Mustafa Denizli brought on veteran Nihat Kahveci and Brazilian Bobo for Yusuf Şimşek and Bobo in the second half to bolster his team’s frontline. Both squads displayed more attacking football in the second half, but neither side managed to break the deadlock. After Uğur İnceman entered the game for Fink at the 85th minute mark, the Black and White had a flurry of chances in the dying minutes to regain the lead but failed to convert them; as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
