Quotes from Mustafa Denizli

In a post-game press conference, our Technical Director Mustafa Denizli assessed Beşiktaş’s Super Cup performance:

“Both sides had enough chances to win the match comfortably. If we could capitalize on our first half chances, we would be lifting our third cup of the season right now. A couple of defensive lapses cost us the game. In general, it was an evenly played match and could go both ways. Neither team managed to impose its superiority and looked completely sharp out there. But the two teams’ performance should be regarded as normal at this stage, because we are still in preseason and we have time to improve. I am sure both teams will get better and play much higher quality of football in coming weeks.
Both Fenerbahçe goals came from individual defensive mistakes which have been rare in pre-season but proved crucial tonight. If we want to retain our titles this season, we have to be more careful in defense. After the penalty goal, our defense also pushed forward for the equalizer and had no other choice but to leave the back door open. That’s how Fenerbahçe got their second.  We congratulate them on their victory. Winning this prestigious cup would help us start the season on right foot but we are not complaining, because it was a valuable a test for us after all.
In this game, we had an opportunity to see what our new players could do out there. Our lineup had more offensive players in the second half. We also played with limited number of foreign players. All these put a lot of pressure on our midfield and tired us out in that position; but we now know what our offensive capacity is in a real tight game.”
When asked about if Beşiktaş needed new players, Denizli replied: “As I mentioned before, we are still looking for a playmaker but haven’t found him yet. Apart from him, we don’t need anyone; because I am quite satisfied with our current roster. As you will all witness soon, our team is capable of going all the way this season. Although we lost the final, we learned where we need to improve tonight.”
