Beşiktaş 1-1 Catania

Visiting Catania from Italian Serie A and Beşiktaş played to 1-1 tie at BJK İnönü Stadium in a pre-season exhibition game.

Before the kickoff, a one minute silence observed in memory of sports speaker Orhan Şengürbüz who passed away over the weekend.
The Black and White applied early pressure and came close to scoring on a couple of occasions with Nobre and Erkan Zengin; but their close-range shots went inches wide. As the game wore on, the Italian team tried to test Beşiktaş’s net with fast counterattacks, but they fizzled out quickly because Black Eagles’ dangerous looking wing attacks kept them pinned deep into their own end in the early going. Twelve minutes into the game, fullback Ismail crossed the ball to striker Nobre who headed it to unmarked Erkan Zengin waiting near the penalty spot. Young Erkan sent a bullet to the top left corner; but Catania’s keeper made a diving save and denied him the opener.
Thanks to attacks initiated from the right flank by Erkan Zengin, the Black and White controlled the match for most of the first half, but ironically it was the visitors who would get on the scoreboard first. In the 31st minute, referee awarded Catania a free-kick for a foul by Ferrari just outside the box; and Martinez headed in the ensuing cross from the left to put his side a goal up. The Black and White got over the shock quickly and pressed for an immediate equalizer during the remainder of the half but could not find the back of the net; as the first 45 minutes ended 1-0 in favor of the visitors.
After replacing goalkeeper Rustu with Hakan Arıkan, Beşiktaş brought on Tello, Yusuf, Bobo and Holosko for Nobre, Serdar Özkan, Uğur Inceman and Erkan Zengin in the scond half to provide additional scoring power upfront. The tactic paid off; and the Black and White evened the score at 1-1 with an excellent goal from Tello.  The Chilean player’s well-hit free kick from 20 yards out beat the Italian goalkeeper and brought the teams on level terms on 56 minutes. The equalizer did not slow Beşiktaş down; as they kept searching for a go-ahead goal. The veteran defender Ibrahim Üzülmez entered the game for Ismail Köybaşı at the 70th minute mark, as the Black and White began to dominate the play with the foursome of Holosko, Ernst, Yusuf and Tello but unfortunately saw all efforts flash wide from decent positions. Soon after the visitors’ keeper made a clutch interception on Holosko’s pass intended for Bobo who was wide open in front of the goal line, Beşiktaş had another chance to take the lead in the dying minutes. But Holosko failed to connect on Yusuf’s brilliant cross from right wing and the Black Eagles had to settle for a 1-1 tie in their pre-season home opener.
