Mustafa Denizli Extends Contract

In a ceremony attended by the President Yıldırım Demirören, Beşiktaş has signed current Technical Director Mustafa Denizli to one-year extension.

In addition to President Yıldırım Demirören, Vice-President Ertunç Soğancıoğlu was also present at the signing ceremony.
President Yıldırım Demirören spoke at the ceremony and said: “We’ve decided to extend Mr. Denizli’s contract for one more year. Few days after our final league match, he came up to us and requested some time to rest. Unfortunately, the media interpreted this short leave as a bargaining period. In fact, no such thing ever happened. A Turkish technical director who has just won two cups after 19 seasons and rewrote the national football history by making the top 3 Istanbul teams champions surely deserves a holiday. We thank him for his contributions to our club once and wish good luck for the next season.”
He refuted the popular belief that a team needed new players each year to build a title contender:
“You may bring in as many new players as you like; if they don’t embrace your club’s philosophy and play by heart, you will achieve nothing. For this very reason, we are different from other clubs; and not everybody can wear the Black and White jersey. Quality players like Nihat Kahveci may leave us temporarily, but they always come back to Beşiktaş in the end.”
After announcing that the Black and White had reached an agreement with Villareal for Nihat Kahveci’s transfer, Mr. Demirören unveiled the new additions to his team: Ismail Köybaşı from Gaziantepspor, Rıdvan Şimşek from Karşıyaka, Erhan Güven from Ankaraspor, and Michael Fink from Eintracht Frankfurt. According to him, all these transfers were carried out in line with Mustafa Denizli’s reports.
Reminding that Beşiktaş has filled their quota of foreign players,  Mr Demirören went on to clarify Beşiktaş’s current policy towards signing foreign players: “ If you want to go all the way in Champions League, you must have a team full of international stars. Therefore, everyone here wants us to sign some big names. But they are not aware how much they will cost. I don’t think any Turkish football team can afford them without going bankrupt; so we are building our team on low cost but quality international players. Our immediate goal is to qualify from the first group. We will review our policy according to that.”
When quizzed about Gökhan Zan’s transfer to Galatasaray, Demirören replied, “Gökhan Zan used to be our team captain, I have nothing to say but wish him all the best in future endeavors.”
He also quelled the transfer rumors surrounding Brazilian striker Bobo, “Up to now, we have not received any serious offers for Bobo and we have no intention of letting him go because he is our leading scorer; and it will be hell of a job to replace him. Let it be known that we are not interested in cheap offers. If a club really wants to transfer Bobo, it has to pay the price we are asking for him, providing that Mustafa Denizli approves such a transfer.”
Mr. Demirören ended his speech by saying that the legal procedures to rebuild the BJK İnönü Stadium were going in accordance with the plan; but they would still go ahead and sell season tickets because there was not much time left for the next season. If the building permission is granted before the start of the season, the club will play its games at another ground.
Our Technical Director Mustafa Denizli made these comments during the signing ceremony:
“We just left behind a tiring race and all of us needed a break to make a fresh start. But some misunderstood the situation and reached to wrong conclusions. Anyways, they are all history now, and today I am as thrilled as my first day at Beşiktaş. Last season, our President, Management, Players and Fans were all united over a common goal—to win the league title.  We worked hard and managed to capture it in the end. Now, together with our new additions to our roster, we must find a way to retain our title, while taking our team to better places in Europe. Our preparations for the new season will get underway Monday, and you will be briefed about the new developments as they unfold. Since this is a continuous process, we are going to start where we have left off last season. We may not look as excited as the previous season, but we are definitely more experienced. We will put it in good use and try to be stronger team than last year. Despite being offered longer contracts by the management, I signed a one-year contract with Beşiktaş. This is a principle I always stick to. It not only takes the pressure off from both parties but frees management’s hands to act quickly. It is also less costly for the club. Only, time and our field performance will tell how many more times we are going to extend this contract.”
In reference to the new transfers, Mustafa Denizli explained, “I have given a list of players I want to see on my team next season to the management. I hope to keep all our players; but as you already know, some European teams are after some of our players, and Bobo is one of them. If you are a champion of one of the top leagues in Europe, this is normal and you cannot avoid it. Even tough it will be difficult to find a new player in his capacity, if the price is right, we can let him go. But I hear, so far the club has not received a serious offer for him.”
Just like the President Demirören, Mustafa Denizli pointed out that at present Beşiktaş had no room for a new foreign player, “If we want to bring in a new player from abroad, we must let one of our current international players go and we don’t want it. Nonetheless, we are keeping all our options open and working on alternative plans. It all depends on our performance; we will wait and see.”
As an advocate of homegrown young players, Mr. Denizli disclosed his intentions of giving some playing time to young stars from Under-18 team next season and continued: “ If our budget allows, we may sign a couple of new players; but by and large, I am satisfied with our current roster. I believe we have the capacity to beat any team in Europe. This doesn’t mean that our transfer activities are over. We may need some additions as the Champions League moves along; but it is too early to decide who stays and who goes. No one should worry we still have lots of time to perfect our lineup, and we are working on it day and night. Our pre-season games will hold some clues to our future. At this point, all I can say is that we are going to have a better team on the field next season.”
According to our Technical Director Mustafa Denizli, the Black and White will train in Istanbul until July 23 and then travel to Spain for the Peace Cup. It is also possible that the Black Eagles will play a couple of exhibition games in Istanbul before they take off to Spain. After the Peace Cup, Beşiktaş will fly to Germany and continue their pre-season preparations in that country. The Turkish Super Cup Final will take place in Germay this season.
Following the speeches, parties put their signatures to the contract.
