With goals from Holosko (28) and İbrahim Toraman (63), visiting Beşiktaş clinched the 2008-09 Turkcell Super League title with 71 points by defeating Denizlispor 2-1 at Atatürk Stadium and in doing so, claimed their second championship after Turkey Cup in less than a month.
A large group travelling Beşiktaş supporters did not leave the Black Eagles walk alone in this crucial league clash and cheered for their beloved team throughout the entire 90 minutes. A one-minute pre-game silence was observed in memory of the martyrs who lost their lives during the recent terrorist attacks. In order not to put their title hopes at risk, the Black and White pulled back and relied on occasional counterattacks in the early going. The visitors’ tactic would pay its dividends in the 28th minute when Holosko found the net with a crafty flick off a superb through ball from Cisse and sent the Beşiktaş crowd wild, drawing a variety of victory chants from the fans. Uğur İnceman replaced injured Tello after 43 minutes; and the Black Eagles took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
After İbrahim Toraman doubled the score in the 63rd, the Black and White replaced Serdar Özkan and Bobo with İbrahim Üzülmez and Nobre for defensive measures. Braga pulled one back for Denizlispor on 84 minutes, but it was too little and too late; as Beşiktaş ran out 2-1 victors to finish the 34- week season atop the table with 71 points.
Fans celebrated the Black Eagles’ championship victory with street parades allover the country until early Sunday. It was the 13th League title for Beşiktaş, the first since 2002-2003 season which was also our club’s 100th anniversary.
