In the aftermath of the Fenerbahçe game, Beşiktaş Technical Director Mustafa Denizli evaluated the Black and White’s performance for the press:
“Since our rival lost today, if we would have won tonight, the title race would be over to a great extent; and we would declare ourselves the winner. But unfortunately, we wasted a golden opportunity to claim the top spot and had to move up our announcement. This shows that no contender can afford to drop points at this stage because it is really tight up there and there aren’t too many games left to play.Despite what the tabloid sports press says, we planned and prepared hard for this game and were out to win at all costs. I am sure there wasn’t a single Beşiktaş player out there who didn’t know what a difference a win would make tonight. But let’s not forget all trainings are based on theories; if you can’t put them into practice, they mean nothing to you.
Having to play the last match of the week surely puts pressure on you. Watching others play and waiting so long sometimes make you lose your concentration. The impatient expectations of the fans, on the other hand, may also affect your performance in a negative way. On top of all these, let’s not discount our archrival which desperately needed a win to save their season.
Despite the loss, our title aspirations have not suffered any serious blow, and we are still the main contender in this race; but we must win all our remaining matches. I am confidant the results of our upcoming games will prove my point. There is also a contagious side of football like swine flu. If a player is having a bad day out there, his performance spreads quickly among the others; and you start playing poorly as well. If your seasoned players are also experiencing the same problem, it means the whole team is under a lot of stress. We really wanted to win this game but unfortunately, the things didn’t work out our way tonight. Now, we are looking forward to our next league match to make up for this loss. Our fans should not be alarmed in any way because their team is going to be up there at the end.”
