By picking up foun medals, Beşiktaş Chess Team achieved great success in 2009 Age Group Turkish Championship, held in Kemer, Antalya this weekend.
At the end of a hotly-contested tournament participated by a total of 996 young chess players, Mert Yılmazyerli won the Boys 18- Year Age category.Silver medals went to Burcu Şaşmazel in Girls 14-year Age and Cansu Söylemez in 16-Year Age groups. Cankut Emiroğlu finished third in 14-Year Age category.
Aiming for Championship
The first stage of the 2008-09 Türkiye İş Bankass Chess League got underway in Kemer, Antalya over the weekend.
Beşiktaş Chess Team has been competing in the said league for the past three years and has two championship titles under its belt. Although, our boys in Black and White ended up finishing fifth last season; they are again aiming for the title this year with a fairly strengthened squad. In addition to their experienced international players such as Robert Markus, Dragan Solak and Ana Srebrnic, the Black and White’s young players have been putting forth a strong performance and gaining the admiration of all chess-lovers.
Beşiktaş Chess Team which is currently being managed by Player- Coach Umut Atakaşi includes: twice European Girls 16-Year Age category Champion and World Youth Runner-Up Kübra Öztürk, Boys 11-Year Age World Schools’ Champion and European Bronze Medalist Cankut Emiroğlu and Girls 14-Year Age Turkish Championship Silver Medalist Burcu Şaşmazel.
