Kepez Bld.:80, Beşiktaş Cola Turka:67

Kepez Belediyesi took down visiting Beşiktaş Cola Turka Men’s Basketball, 80-67, in Week 16 game of the Beko Basketball League.

Teams exchanged baskets in the early moments of the first quarter; and Beşiktaş answered experienced Robert Traylor’s layups with a three-pointer by Jimmy Baxter to remain within striking distance. Kepez Belediyesi was holding a 5-3 lead two minutes into the opening frame; but the Black and White went on a 6-0 run to pull ahead 9-5 at the halfway mark. Hakan Erol and Darren McLinton knocked down back-to-back jumpers to bring the deficit down 9-11 with 3:35 left on the clock; but Kepez decided to take a timeout to talk things over after Adem Ören drove to the hoop for a layup. In order to get back into the game, the home team relied heavily on Edmund Saunders’ hot-hand in the closing stages; nevertheless, Mire Chatman would step up in the dying minutes and hit some big shots to build a 24-17 cushion for the Black and White by the end of the opening quarter.
The first attacks of the second quarter passed by resultless shots reciprocally. After Edmund Saunders sank a pair of free-throws to start the second frame, Kepez tightened up on defense to keep the visitors scoreless for nearly three minutes while Berent Kayaklıoğlu and new transfer Gerald Fitch helped the host squad crawl back to within 1-point at 24-23 with 7:00 to play in the half. Soon after Darren McLinton responded to Jimmy Baxter’s buckets with consecutive free-throws, the game turned into a seesaw affair and the teams were locked in a 29-29 tie with four minutes remaining. Although Kepez briefly regained the lead, 32-31, on McLinton’s three-pointer, a late Beşiktaş Cola Turka surge put the Black and White up, 37-35, going into locker room at the break.
Kepez Belediyesi opened the second half with a driving layup by Hakan Erol and leveled the score at 37. Despite Mire Chatman’s impressive offensive performance inside the painted area, Gerald Fitch and Hakan Erol connected on their open outside shots to give the home side a slim 44-43 edge midway through the quarter. With 2:00 to play in the third stanza, Ray Wesson made a pair of fair free-throws to pull the Black and White within 47-46; but Barış Güney drained a couple of clutch jumpers in the dying seconds utilizing the assist of Levent Bilgin that opened up a six-point, 53-47, advantage over a rather subdued Beşiktaş Cola Turka entering the final frame of the play.
Jimmy Baxter made a reverse layup to start the fourth quarter and narrow the margin to 53-49. Kepez’s new American Gerald Fitch would come back, however, and unleash a barrage of threes from all over the court to widen the gap to 9 points, 61-52, with 7:00 to go.  The Black and White tried to stay alive with Jimmy Baxter, whose layups kept Beşiktaş Cola Turka in the game. But the visitors had real trouble stopping red-hot Gerald Fitch, who went on a late tear with back-to-back threes to push the lead to 71-54 at the 36:00 mark. The Black and White made a last-ditch effort to salvage the game down the stretch, only to see Kepez Belediyesi hold its ground to emerge with a convincing 80-67 victory.
