Beşiktaş Cola Turka 51, Galatasaray 59

Beşiktaş Cola Turka Women’s Basketball suffered a 59-51 defeat at the hands of crosstown rival Galatasaray in a Week 11 game.

After Tuğba Taşcı drilled a three-pointer from left corner to open scoring for the Black and White, Seimone Augustus drove to the hoop for a layup to bring the visiting red and yellow team within 3-2. Laura Harper tried to widen the gap with a jumper; but Işıl Alben’s hit a fadeaway from the right wing to cut deficit to a single point at 5-4. Then the visitors pulled ahead 6-5 on Augustus’s driving layup. From that point on, the teams exchanged baskets to gain the upper hand, but Galatasaray, nonetheless, was clinging to a slim 8-7 lead at the midway mark. Tuğba Taşcı answered Şaziye Karslı’s 25-foot three-pointer with a jumper of her own and kept the Black and White within striking distance. Although Beşiktaş Cola Turka regained its momentum in the closing stages, the visitors tightened up on defense and managed to hold onto a 15-14 edge entering the second quarter.
Galatasaray started to the second period with substitutions. The red and yellow opened the second frame with Yasemin Horasan’s running jumper, but Laura Harper retailed quickly for the Lady Black and White and kept the score close. Nevertheless, getting plenty of help from their bench, the visitors widened the deficit to 6 points at 22-16 on a pair of outside shots by Tuğba Palazoğlu. Shay Doron tried to keep Beşiktaş Cola Turka in the game with her driving layups; however, the visiting red and yellow ladies were still up by seven, 26-19, midway through the quarter. Then Harper and Naile İvegün knocked down back-to-back buckets to cut the deficit to three points, but a late 6-0 Galatasaray run gave the visitors a 32-23 advantage at the half.
After Laura Harper and Seimone Augustus traded baskets to start the second half, the visitors began to pull away on a string of unanswered points by Sophia Young and Işıl Alben to stretch the lead to 38-25 with 7:12 left. Tuğba Taşcı connected on a 14-foot jumper along the left base line for Beşiktaş Cola Turka, in an attempt to prevent the game from slipping away, but  Şaziye Karslı banged in a three-pointer from behind the arch to extend the margin to 41-27 with 4:00 remaining on the clock. Refusing to waive the white flag, the Black and White put together a late surge and managed to trim the deficit to six points, 41-35 in the dying minutes. At the end of a hard-fought third quarter, Galatasaray’s lead was reduced to 45-39; and the Lady Black and White had climbed back within striking distance of its long-time crosstown rival.
Beşiktaş Cola Turka carried its momentum into the final stanza and closed the gap even further on a layup by Shay Doron. Galatasaray struggled to find its shots at the onset of the fourth; as Yasemin Horasan’s free-throws gave the visitors their first points in the quarter. Then both teams started playing aggressive defense and crowded the lane to force each other into jump shots. When the teams kept firing blanks and came empty handed on quite a few occasions, it turned out to be a low scoring game. Nonetheless, the visitors were up, 48-41, with 4:55 left to play. Beşiktaş Cola Turka made a last-ditch attempt to steal the show and managed to tie the score at 48-48 with 2:15 to play in regulation time. But Şaziye Karslı’s three-pointer from left wing put the visitors back on top, 51-48. The Black and White desperately sought to stay alive but kept missing shot after shot. After Işıl Alben made it 55-48 by sinking her free-throws, Tuğba Taşcı’s 26-foot three-pointer from the top of the key, with twenty seconds remaining in the game, brought Beşiktaş Cola Turka within 55-51; but Galatasaray displayed tenacious defense in the waining seconds to emerge with a hotly-contested 59-51 derby victory.
