January 2009

‘‘Dear Beşiktaş Fans,
Regardless of what has happened in recent weeks, we are still fully committed to attain all our objectives in football this season. At the end of the first half of the season, thanks to a couple of horribly officiated derby fiascos, we’ve ended up lower than we expected in the standings. We were left with no other choice but to raise our voice, because the said poor officiating has seemed to hurt Beşiktaş more than any other team in the League. We would keep quite and mind our own business, if we had not come across a clear case of double standards in our recent games. Because this foul play has been going on for the past 20 years in a systematic and consistent way, we said ‘‘enough is enough’’ and stood up for our rights.
Ever since my very first day in office, I’ve detected a conspiracy to reduce the number of most popular clubs in Turkey from 3 to 2, leaving Beşiktaş out of the picture completely. Although, the enemies of our 105-year-old club have sometimes succeeded in stealing our championship titles by exercising control over some federation officials and referees, they have always underestimated the greatness and power of Beşiktaş. They do not know that with your constant support, this and future Beşiktaş managements will never take a step backwards and continue to defend the interests of Beşiktaş until the very end.
Dear Beşiktaş Fans,
In spite of all the negative and unfair attacks directed at our football squad’s first half performance, we are quite encouraged by the support we have been receiving from you.
I am sure our beloved Beşiktaş will fare much better in the second half of the season; because we not only play most of the league contenders at home, but the President of Central Referee Committee—who has admitted that major mistakes have been made by the referees—promised fair and unbiased officiating rest of the way. We are confident that our team is capable of beating any team in this league if it is allowed to play on equal terms.
Our Süleyman Seba Sports Facility in Fulya, which is designed to make us a world-class club, will be operational very soon. It will also provide a dependable and stable source of income for our club in these dire economic times. The die-hard Beşiktaş supporters have been anxiously awaiting the completion of this unique project, because they know very well that the future of our club lies in these types of projects. They constitute a solid foundation for our future success.
In 2009, we hope to overcome the bureaucratic obstacles that have impeded our Inönü Stadium project, which must be regarded not as another major step forward for Beşiktaş but Turkish sports in general.
Of course, our management cannot achieve all these goals alone; so today more than ever, regardless of what our adversaries do or say, we have to stand united and act like one big family. Let’s not forget if we remain divided, we are bound to fall sooner or later; and that’s exactly what our adversaries want to hear and see these days. No doubt, they have been trying to push us out of the title race with all their might. However, if we stick together and show them our real power; no one will dare to get in our way, and we’ll be able to deal with new challenges more effectively.

With this opportunity, I wish each and everyone one of you good health, happiness and prosperity in 2009.

Yıldırım Demirören,
Chairman of the Board, Beşiktaş JK.’’
