PRESIDENT DEMIROREN’S PRESS MEETING

Beşiktaş President Yıldırım Demirören held a press meeting at BJK Nevzat Demir Sports Facilities and accused Football Federation and Central Referee Committee of foul play that could be traced back 20 years, but Beşiktaş Club management would not let it continue any further because ‘‘enough is enough’’ :

‘‘Today, I would like to address to all Beşiktaş Community. The comments I will make here is not only related to our recent game against Galatasaray, but concerns a series of dirty tricks that are being played upon Beşiktaş in a systematic and consistent manner that go back almost 20 years. We have to scrutinize them in two different time frames. First of all, let’s recall those seasons in which we ended up finishing runner-up.  While our rivals’ finished their matches with basketball scores, Beşiktaş was constantly denied countless obvious penalties, not to mention that famous volleyball spike in Van City that cost us the title that year. While we displayed true amateurship on the pitch, our rivals bribed our opponents with brand new cars. I could go on many more examples like these. At that time, the Champions League did not exist; and winning the national title brought no money but only prestige. Thanks to numerous off-the-field scams, even during those years, the league titles we truly deserved were stolen from us one by one and handed to our rivals. After our past Presidents, Süleyman Seba and Serdar Bilgili, correctly perceived economic benefits of participating in European Championships and completed the required institutionalization process of our Club in time; I tried to bring our Fulya Project to its conclusion and launch our Inönü Stadium’s renovation project, both intended to strengthen Beşiktaş financially. Apperantly, these developments, which would make Beşiktaş a world class club, bothered some circles; as they decided to implement the second stage of their attacks against us. Let’s travel in time once again:  during 2003 -04 season that followed our first place finish in our Club’s 100th year anniversary, Beşiktaş had an 8-point lead over its closest rival entering the winter-break. Then, starting with Samsunspor game-- in which 5 Beşiktaş players received questionable red cards-- a campaign got underway to keep our Club away from the first place. If we analyze the events one by one, we will conclude that this successful anti-Beşiktaş campaign is still going on even today. Here, I would like draw your attention to the underlying causes of this negative campaign:
Since 2004, as President of this 105- year-old Club, I have frequently witnessed that some circles are consistently forcing us to believe that three are only 2 big clubs in Turkish Football, not 3, pushing our football team outside the picture completely. This scam, which has been carried out systematically over the years, is directed at us only. They are doing everything in power to belittle Beşiktaş; however, our fans need not worry, because, from now on, we are going to fight back harder and spoil their evil plans.
Now, I give the floor to our Secretary General Kenan Öner who will show you some of the controversial calls we received over the years.’’
Then, Mr.Kenan Öner took the floor and demonstrated the bad referee calls, which cost the Black and White various league titles over 20 years, on video.
‘‘This short video shows how Beşiktaş has been treated unfairly over the years. It also proves that we are being continuously subjected to double standards. To the disadvantage of our team, you will witness two different calls for a similar position. Since this list goes on forever, we are showing you only the important ones. In short, while Beşiktaş was collectively mistreated by the referees and the federation’s authorities, some teams were protected and got favorable calls.’’
Mr. Öner went on to discuss the questionable red cards awarded to Beşiktaş players:
‘‘ In our derby game against Fenerbahçe, the referee Bünyamin Gezer showed two controversial yellow cards to Cisse and forced us to carry on short-handed.  As all football authorities later agreed, in that game, we put out a strong performance until we were undermanned. If we had a full line-up on the pitch, we would’ve had a good chance to win. But for some unjustified reasons, we always end up playing with 10 men against 11 in our derby matches; it has become habit in recent years.’’
Reminding us that all Turkish football circles accepted the fact that Beşiktaş was truly wronged in recent matches, Secretary General Kenan Öner continued:
‘‘Especially during last two months, nearly all critical calls went against us; and while other contenders received easy calls and surged ahead, we dropped valuable points on ungiven penalties and controversial red cards, falling further behind in the standings as a result. If we don’t raise our voice against these injustices, nobody is going to lift a finger to put the system back on tract. All we want is to compete on equal terms. Isn’t it what football is all about? A game of fair play… For example, we have no objection to the red card awarded to Tello in our Ankaraspor game, because he truly deserved it.  But other red cards were extremely harsh and cost us dearly. Even the ex-referee Ahmet Çakar believes that ‘‘Beşiktaş Football team is being butchered by bad calls for the past two seasons at an unprecedented rate.’’ A week ago, Trabzonspor lost due to an offside goal; but this week the officials rushed to help them with a serious of bad calls. Nowhere in the world, referees have this much influence on the outcome of the game.  You can accept some mistakes; it is a decision of just a moment, the referee may miss it. But these are such a big mistakes that you can not ignore them. Everyone says it is difficult to come across a referee you can fully trust these days. Sometimes, we wonder if they are carrying out orders to help a certain team. Nevertheless, we still think it’s not too late to put an end to all these referee mistakes and have a decent and fair title race until the end of the season. But from now on, all the referees and football federation authorities, who assigned them to our games, have to be real careful with their decisions, because enough is enough.’’
Secretary General Kenan Öner ended his speech with these words:
‘‘This video demonstrated you the poor refereeing we received over the years that cost us championships. We want fair and equal implementation of rules for all teams without double standards.   We want to compete in a clean and non-controversial league in which best team wins the title. We expect no favor or protection from any authority. Besides, everybody is against us. Who is going to protect our rights?  We are well aware of our responsibilities toward our fans and they want to see us winning the title. We cannot afford to lose due to unfair and bad calls.  That’s the reason why we are here today. Up until now, we always kept our silence on these matters; but the situation has become unbearable during the past 2 years. But the recent events have stretched our patience to its limits. Even Mr.Oğuz Sarvan, the Head of Central Referee Committee, has admitted that his referees made countless mistakes in the first half of Turkcell Super League. We expect them to take very tough action during this winter-break and end this poor refereeing once and for all. We also know that since the referees are also human like us, it is not possible to end the bad calls completely. But if they carry out their task properly, they can minimize their mistakes. They should stay away from double standards and apply the rules equally. Last season, Nobre’s goal in Büyükşehir Belediye game was disallowed because of a foul call against the goalkeeper; but Mehmet Yıdız and Servet Çetin scored the same goal this season, and the referees allowed both goals. How can you make two different rulings for a same position? Let’s hope, fair play will prevail in the second half of the season; otherwise, we are heading into a chaos and we assume no responsibility for it.’’
PRESIDENT DEMIROREN’S ADDRESS TO BEŞİKTAŞ FANS
Following Kenan Öner’s speech, President Yıdırım Demirören addressed to our fans and reiterated his commitment to end all foul play against Beşiktaş:
‘‘Dear Beşiktaş Fans,
Today, we are facing an evil scenario designed to prevent us from reaching our goals. But the owners of this scenario should also know that, as long as we are here, they will never be able to execute their plans. Some people are still having trouble determining the characteristics of our fans. Those who are not familiar with our maturity, which emanates from Beşiktaş’s 105-year-old legacy, will sooner or later drown in a sea of their own creation. We are all true- blue Beşiktaş fans; our patience and tolerance comes not from weakness but from our greatness. We will always be an advocate of good sportsmanship and fair play.  We will resist the popular concept of ‘‘ends justify the means’’ at all times. We intend to maintain our traditional Beşiktaş stand; and fight against those who think we are sitting targets till the bitter end.
Dear Beşiktaş Fans,
We just saw how our beloved Beşiktaş was impeded on the pitch and systematically wronged through a series of bad calls and unjustified red cards that exposed the double standards of Turkish Football Federation and Central Referee Committee. These are some of the injustices we’ve suffered on the pitch. However, we also face numerous other challenges off the pitch. As you all know, our Fulya Project will soon make Beşiktaş a world class team.  The enemies of Beşiktaş are doing everything they can to impede the conclusion of this unique project, which must be regarded as a giant step forward for Turkish sports. It will also be a steady source of income for our Club. Naturally, this is a hard to swallow achievement for above mentioned anti-Beşiktaş circles, which are quite active in financial matters as well.
Our stadium renovation project is another area where we encounter unlimited number of obstacles. I believe it is time to make public why we have been unable to get this valuable project off the ground. The project, which keeps city’s historical fabric intact, not only delivers a brand new closed stadium but also a 5000-seat amphitheater with a 2500-capacity closed car park. This advanced project will be Beşiktaş’s gift to Istanbul which is selected as the 2010 European Capital of Culture. Here comes the tricky part. Although UEFA standards call for a closed car park, the Ministry of Cultures’ bureaucrats are delaying the project on the grounds that the said car park will cause traffic congestion. Moreover, they have recently suggested that we pack up leave. My dear friends, Inönü Stadium has become the symbol of Beşiktaş all over the world, and we have no intention of leaving it. Therefore, the bureaucrats should reconsider their decisions and allow us to proceed with the project.
While we are experiencing all these difficulties, one of our crosstown rivals has no permit for its stadium and the other is getting all the required help it needs for its new stadium project. Now, all our fans should step forward and question why the other two clubs are receiving preferential treatment while Beşiktaş is always left in the cold like a step child.
Now, I would like to say a few words about our media. As a democratic management, we welcome all kinds of criticisms. But here I must single out all those who exceeds the limits of public criticism and attacks me and my club with bad intentions. They may increase their ratings in the press and TV or gain some kinds of other benefits through these never-ending insults. However, their advancement will always remain temporary, because they will never win over the majority of true Beşiktaş fans, who are not capable of discerning right from wrong but will stand behind their Presidents in times of crises. It is also an undeniable fact that these media celebrities, who refuse to recognize Beşiktaş as third force in Turkish Football, are often ready to back anti-Beşiktaş circles in Fulya and Inönü Stadium projects.
Here, the TV Stations that broadcast these so called ‘‘Sports Programs’’ deserve some words as well.   We have been watching these prejudiced and one-sided programs every week. The mediator and guest of these shows are true experts at misguiding the public with their double standards we have cited previously. They are the same bunch who brought about lengthy suspensions to Zago, İbrahim Üzülmez and Nobre in the past. They are the same group who fueled the down fall of Beşiktaş with a vicious ‘‘the league is over’’ campaign although the Black and White was ahead by 8 points. But we are not going to lower ourselves to their level. We have intentions of organizing street demonstrations that denounce the media, federation and referees in public. As we often said, Beşiktaş fans are quite different from other fans; we will take the streets only when we win the championship title. At that time we will celebrate our victory in a civilized way.  The solidarity and unity among our fans have always helped us get through difficult periods. But they should not give up supporting their team and avoid negative and harmful slogans, especially the ones that target club’s management. Let’s not forget only the General Assembly can change Beşiktaş presidents and management not the stands
I would like reiterate once again that we are not here to pave the way for our championship aspirations. All we want is fair play. We’d like to compete in a league that promotes integrity at all times. I want to give you an example: during our game against Galatasaray, when referee did not show our player Zapo a second yellow card, I told Mr. Özgener and Arıboğan that he truly deserved a red card and be sent off. I don’t think club presidents in Turkey can display this much sincerity, integrity and candor while watching their teams play.
I would like take this opportunity to apologize from all concern parties for the harsh words I had inadvertently used after our derby game against Galatsaray that took place at Ali Sami Yen Stadiums last weekend. Since Beşiktaş Presidents should always set an example to others on all aspects of life, I ask forgiveness from our fans as well. But I also want them to know that my anger stems from 20 years of foul play this club has had to deal with.
I hope Beşiktaş Community will start looking at the events from a different perspective from now on. We organized this meeting to show Beşiktaş supporters what lies beneath the tip of the iceberg.  But whatever happens in coming days, we must stand united against the enemies of Beşiktaş and support the club management who works day and night to serve the interests of Beşiktaş.  In conclusion, I want to make clear that we are not afraid of anybody; and we have all the means to over come this temporary crisis.
Dear Beşiktaş Fans, instead of fighting among ourselves, let’s get together and create that great Beşiktaş we’ve been all waiting for.
Thank you for your patience and time.’’
