Beşiktaş Cola Turka 86, Banvit 85

Our Beşiktaş Cola Turka Men’s Basketball Team squeaks out an 86-85 OT win over visiting Banvit on Matchday 10 of the Beko Basketball League.

After Cevher Özer opened the scoring for the Black and white with a 20-foot jump shot, Banvit came back and tied it up on Joseph Crispin’s layup. Then, Jimmy Baxter stepped up and scored 5 consecutive points to give Beşiktaş Cola Turka an early 7-2 lead. Erkan Veyseloğlu interrupted Beşiktaş’s run with a 17-foot turnaround jumper from the left wing; but Baxter answered right back and made it 9-4. Then Lance Williams drove to the hoop for a layup to bring his club within 9-6 four minutes into the quarter. However, the Black and White would eventually take advantage of visitor’s sloppy defense and stretch its lead to 9 points, 15-6, midway through the opening frame on a string of unanswered buckets. Nevertheless, Banvit managed to recover soon and began to narrow the gap with consecutive jumpers by Lance Williams and Crispin. With 4:20 remaining on the clock, Crispin’s 25-foot three-pointer from the left corner cut the deficit to 2 points at 15-13. Nonetheless, Beşiktaş Cola Turka refused to get caught, as Baxter and Cevher Özer continued to pour it on the visitors to put the Black and White up, 23-20, heading into second quarter.
Banvit got plenty of help from its bench at the outset of the second frame; as Erkan Veyseloğlu drilled a three-pointer along the baseline to start quarter and tie the game at 23. Beşiktaş Cola Turka hit back immediately with Mike Chatman’s three to make it 26-23, only to see Caner Topaloğlu and Lance Williams connect on back-to-back jumpers to put the visitors on top, 27-26, their first lead in the game, after two minutes. Then both teams played tenacious defense and were locked in a 29-29 tie at the halfway mark. But soon after, the hot-shooting trio of Darlon Johnson, Caner Topaloğlu and Lance Williams would spark an 8-2 run to build a 6-point, 37-31, cushion with 2:35 left. However, the undeterred Black and White managed to rally back and crawled within 2 points, 39-37, entering the final minute. Despite Mire Chatman’s free-throws,which tied the score at 39-39, the visitors closed out the half with a 45-42 advantage.
Banvit came out of the gates swinging in the second half and grabbed a 50-46 edge following a 14-foot fade away jumper by Caner Topaloğlu. Nevertheless, backed by boisterous fans, Beşiktaş Cola Turka would quickly get back on track and regain the lead at 51-50 on Chatman’s consecutive baskets. But the visiting Banvit surged right back on top with Crispin’s 27-foot three-pointer from the top of the key and then went on to take a 56-51 lead midway through the third stanza. After Adem Ören knocked down a three-pointer to shave the deficit to 2 points, 56-54, the teams traded buckets until the end of the quarter; but the visitors were still ahead, 65-60 after three quarters of play.
Dennis Mims made a layup for the Black and White to open the fourth; but Agudio sank a pair of free-throws and kept the point gap intact. As the game progressed, due to dismal outside shooting, the visitors struggled to maintain their lead, and Beşiktaş Cola Turka took advantage of this situation with Dennis Mims’ hot-hand to close within 2 at 66-64 with 3:00 showing on the clock. Banvit tried to stretch the margin on Johnson’s trey; but Mire Chatman reeled off 5 consecutive points to tie the score at 69 with 5:00 left in regulation time. Although, the green and orange visiting squad would reclaim the lead with Johnson’s tip-in, the hot- shooting Chatman unleashed a three-pointer from downtown to fire the Black and White on top, 72-71 entering final three minutes. Then the game went back and forth rest of the way with the neither side gaining the upper hand. With 2:45 to play Banvit went in front, 73-72, on Crispin’s driving layup, but Cevher Özer hit one of two free-throws to level the score once again, this time at 73-73. After Chatman missed an easy layup, Yunus Çankaya nailed a three-pointer from the right corner and gave Banvit a 76-73 edge with 1:45 left. The remainder of the contest was a real heart-stopping nail-biter for both teams; but, with only 6 seconds left,  the star of the second half, Mire Chatman, stepped up and buried a three-pointer behind the arch to make it 76-76 and sent this exciting game into overtime.
Teams matched each other point for point in the overtime that turned out to be a seesaw affair all the way. Crispin opened the scoring with a three-pointer to put Banvit ahead by 3 at 81-78; but Baxter brought Beşiktaş Cola Turka within 1 with a short jumper. Then Haluk Yıldırım fired a three-pointer from the left wing to carry the Black and White to an 83-81 lead midway through overtime. Banvit retaliated immediately with Crispin’s free-throws and tied the game up at 83-83 before entering final minute of the overtime. After Chatman missed one of his two free-throws, the visitors got to the bucket on their next possession and gave Banvit a one point, 85-84, lead with 20 seconds left to play. With 1 second remaining in OT, Banvit defense fouled Baxter under the hoop to prevent an easy layup; but Baxter hit both throws and lifted the Black and White to a hotly-contested 86-85 victory.
