Beşiktaş Cola Turka 69, Khimki 71

Beşiktaş Cola Turka was defeated to visiting Russian representative, Khimki, 71-69, at Akatlar Cola Turka Arena in its 3rd Eurocup contest.

In order to seize early control, the teams battled point for point at the outset; and Cevher Özer and Mira Chatman swished back-to-back jumpers to answer Jerome Moiso’s layups and keep the score close. At the 3:00 mark, the Black and White pulled ahead, 8-4, on Chatman’s free-throws. But soon after, Beşiktaş Cola Turka had trouble slowing down the hot-shooting international trio of Carlos Delfino, Kelly McCarty and Jorge Garbojosa, who put together a 7-0 run, and fell behind  11-8 midway through quarter.  Jimmy Baxter briefly interrupted the vsitor’s run with a 20-foot jumper from the 11 feet; but the French player Moiso was unstoppable under the hoop. With under 3:00 left, McCarty drove to the hoop for a layup and helped Khimki stretch the lead to 17-12. Chatman and Cevher connected on a pair outside shots and tried to bring the home within striking distance; however Garbojosa and Delfino would combine to score 10 points and put the Russians up, 27-19, at the end of the opening frame.
Both teams made a sluggish start into the second and kept firing blanks. While Vitaly Fridzon and Mike Wilkinson missed their easy layups,   Cevher Özer and Mike Chatman began to hit nothing but the iron. Nevertheless, Adem Ören used Cevher’s assist to end the scoring drought with a 25-foot three-pointer from the top of the arch and cut to deficit to 5 points. Then—despite Vladimir Dyachok’s put-back layup—the Black and White’s defense picked up intensity and forced the Russian team to take an early timeout. After the timeout, Kelly McCarty made a quick layup; but, Beşiktaş Cola Turka played tenacious defense and was only down by 6 points, 32-26 with 4:00 left. Entering the final two minutes, the Black and White narrowed the gap even further on Jimmy Baxter’s driving layup; however, Carlos Delfino would team up with Shabalkin and McCarty to spark a 5-0 Khimki run that extended the visitor’s lead back to 11 at 39-28. In the closing stages, Muratcan Güler stepped up and drained consecutive buckets to erase the deficit, however, the Russians would still hold a 44-33 advantage at the half.
Beşiktaş Cola Turka showed some signs of life in the third; as Adem Ören, Cevher Özer and Mire Chatman all chipped in to help the Black and White climb back to within 5 points at 49-44 with under 4:00 remaining. If we leave out a pair of jumpers by McCarty, the visitors were unable to answer the home team’s surge and had real trouble finding their previous offensive rhythm. After Haluk Yıldırım unleashed a 26-foot three-pointer from the left corner and Cevher Özer nabbed a couple of steals, Chatman dunked the ball to pull Beşiktaş Cola Turka within 2 points, 54-52, with 2:00 left on the clock. Then the Black and White went on to level the game at 54-54 on Dennis Mim’s layup; but, McCarty drilled a three-pointer from downtown at the buzzer and put Khimki back on top, 57-54, heading into final quarter.
Cevher Özer hit a three-pointer to open the fourth and tied the score once again. However, Jerome Moiso and Milt Palacio buried back-to-back runners for a 5 point, 64-59, Khimki edge. Nonetheless, the Black and White refused go way and stayed close with Dennis Mim’s free-throws at the halfway mark. Then Mire Chatman converted a Jimmy Baxter steal into a three-pointer to even the game—this time at 64— and forced another Khimki timeout. Mike Wilkinson made a tip-in following the time out; however, Cevher Özer’s three-pointer would provide Beşiktaş Cola Turka a slim 67-66 lead entering the final 2 minutes of the game. However, the visitors rode the hot shooting of Mike Wilkinson down the stretch and were clinging to a two-point, 71-69, advantage with a little more than a minute remaining to play. The Black and White had its chances to tie or even take the lead in the dying seconds but missed its wide open shots to suffer a frustrating two-point Eurocup loss.
