Following our derby against Fenerbahçe, our Technical Director Mustafa Denizli commented on the game:
“Although we made a couple of simple mistakes in defense and deserved to lose, we never gave up after conceding those unexpected goals and did everything to turn the game in our favor. Despite our strong effort to get back into the game, things didn’t unfold as the way we had planned; so we ended up losing the game. Nevertheless, both teams fought hard and it displayed an exciting match to watch.Of course, when Cisse was sent off and we were reduced to 10 men so early in the game, it had a negative impact on our overall strategy; and we could not make our substations properly.
After we leveled the score, we took complete control of the game and came close to scoring second one; but, an unexpected defensive lapse caused us to fall behind once again. When it comes to my substitutions, I don’t evaluate Tello, Holosko or my other players one by one. For me, what they can do as a combination of twos or threes is much more important that their individual performances. I must admit, not having Tello on our starting line up hindered our performance tonight. We had to review our game plan from top to bottom. He wanted to play in this derby, but our club doctor said his injury wasn’t completely healed; so, we did not want to risk him out there. We still have a long league marathon ahead of us and we must keep all players healthy, because we will eventually need all of them. Tello is one of those players we cannot afford to lose more than a couple of games. I, nonetheless, put him on our 18-men rooster for tonight’s game to provide additional motivation for the others. My players’ health is above all for me.”
