Beşiktaş Cola Turka: 84 Mizo Pecs: 82

Our Beşiktaş Cola Turka Women’s Basketball pulls out an 84-82 OT win over the visiting Hungarian side Mizo Pecs 2010 in its second FIBA Euroleague game.

Putting out a starting line-up consisting of Naile İvegin, Shay Doron, Milica Dabovic, Laura Harper and Alexis Hornbuckle, the Black and White opened scoring with Harper’s bucket. Then, both teams tried to gain the upper-hand but had trouble finding baskets. Nevertheless, a late quarter spurt gave the visitors a 17-13 edge, going to second.
Beşiktaş showed some sings of life in the second quarter and started chipping away at the deficit behind a series of unanswered fast-break points. The Lady Black and White also tightened up its defense and managed to pull ahead 27-23 with consecutive lay-ups midway through the quarter.   The visitors pushed hard to remain within striking distance but still trailed 39-32 at the halftime break.
Mizo Pecs was definitely the stronger side in the second half, as it trimmed the deficit to 1 on back-to-back baskets 3 minutes into the third. While the Hungarian ladies kept pouring it in from all angles, the Black and White looked stagnant and sloppy, falling behind by 6 with 4:00 showing on the clock. Despite a late Beşiktaş rally, Mizo Pecs held a 52-50 lead after three quarters of play.
However, the Black and White regained its lost offensive rhythm in the final quarter and went on to open up an 8 point lead on Dabovic’s 3-pointer with exactly  8:00 remaining. But the Hungarians refused to surrender and took advantage of Beşiktaş’s turnovers to pull within 2, 63-61, with 4:00 left in regulation time. The remaining minutes saw the game turn into seesaw affair with the lead changes several times as the teams entered the final minute locked in a 69-69 tie. Trailing by a single point, 74-73, with 17 seconds to play, Beşiktaş won a pair of free-throws but Doron sank only one of her free-throws and sent the game into overtime.
The teams matched each other point for point in OT and were tied at 80 in the dying minutes. Nonetheless, our Ladies in Black and White managed to take a 4 point, 84-80 lead on Doron’s free-throws entering the final minute to escape with an 84-82 win.
Laure Ashley Harper finished with a game-high 26 points for Beşiktaş, followed by Milica Dabovic who chipped in 18. The other Black and White scorers included: Shay Doron (13), Korona Zanze (12), Alexis Kayree Hornbuckle (10), Müjde Yüksel (3) and Naile İvegin (2).
