Oktay Derelioğlu Retires from Football with Standing Ovation

Our ex-player Oktay Derelioğlu wore Beşiktaş jersey for the last time in an exhibition match against the Azerbaijani side, Hazar Lankeran and put an end to his playing career. The Black and White won the game, 4-0, with goals from Mert Nobre (2), Ibrahim Toraman and Saim Çelik.

The exhibition match took place at BJK Inönü Stadium and was refereed by Özgür Yankaya. Wearing his number 7 jersey, Oktay Derelioğlu stepped on the pitch as Beşiktaş’s Team Captain and received standing ovation from the fans every time he touched ball.
Playing in front of their home crowd for the first time this season, our boys in Black and White took control early and came close to scoring in the 15th minute. But Oktay Derelioğlu’s low drive from inside the box was denied by the post, as he missed a golden opportunity to get into the record book in his jubilee match. One minute later, Oktay Derelioğlu left the pitch on his teammates’ shoulders and officially retired from active playing. While he was heading to the locker room, he got a standing ovation from a vocal crowd, who came out to see their legendary player for the last time. After Necip Uysal replaced Oktay, Beşiktaş raised their tempo, and in the 32nd minute, Mehmet Sedef set up Mert Nobre with an excellent pass, who blasted the ball into the left corner of the visitors’ net to put his side up, 1-0, before the halftime break.
Beşiktaş carried their fast-paced momentum into the second half, and Nobre doubled the Black and White’s lead in the 54th-minute with a brilliant header off Serdar Özkan’s cross. Another perfectly-timed header by Ibrahim Toraman made it 3-0 for Beşiktaş 5 minutes later. Substitute Saim Çelik’s long drive outside the box with 8 minutes to play wrapped the scoring for the night, as the Black and White ran out 4-0 victors in their last serious test, before the new season gets underway next week.
