Rüştü: This Is a Critical Season for Us

Our seasoned goalkeeper revealed that this upcoming season was very crucial for the Beşiktaş Football Club.

In a statement made to BJK TV, Rüştü said, ‘‘As everyone knows we let the championship title slip away out of our hands in the last instance last year, but our community expects us to do much better this season and capture that crown at all costs.’’
Our Turkish international keeper Rüstü added: ‘‘No matter what the others say, it will take time to get all our new players settle into our team. The sooner they complete their adaptation period, the better for our team. Everybody will see the difference in no time.’’
‘‘This season, we managed to blend our experienced players with the young ones. This unique combination will certainly give us an edge over other teams. We have to work much harder than last year, because all our community is expecting major achievements from us this season and we can afford to let them down like we did in the previous season. We’ll make sure that our hard work bear its fruits on the pitch and keep our fans satisfied whole season around,’’ continued Rüştü.
I Will Provide Unconditional Support for the New Captains
Rüştü Reçber added: ‘‘Following that unfortunate event which took place among our ex-captains, we now have two new captains in our squad. As an experienced player, I will give them my wholehearted support and help implement their orders both on and off the pitch. I am sure all our community will do the same. Everyone must know by now that there is no team success without team discipline!’’
I Wish Turkish Keepers Would Defend the Turkish Nets
Our experienced goalkeeper Rüştü Reçber expressed his desire to see Turkish goalkeepers playing for the Turkish professional football teams instead of the foreign nationals.
Underscoring the importance of the continuity in goalkeeping, Rüştü explained:
‘‘If we had only all-Turkish goalkeepers playing in our league, we could use our foreign player quota for other positions and my biggest wish would come true. In fact, we had Turkish keepers defending the nets of our 4 most popular teams in the league last season. But somehow, the situation has changed this year. For example, I think Aykut has very good season last year, but Galatsaray is still trying to replace him. The same goes for Fenerbahçe and Trabzonspor.  It is not fair to judge a keeper by looking at his performance in a single season. After selecting the right keeper, we have trust him and let him play as much as we can.  An ideal goalkeeper develops only after 3-4 seasons. The continuity in goalkeeping is very important. When I was in Spain, they put a 21-year old in the net and he was terrible in his first season. But after 3 seasons, he turned into a respected player. If the European Champions Spanish can be patient with their goalkeepers, so can we.’’
I Have Retired Myself from the National Team, but Anything May Happen In This Country
After applauding the National Team’s success in Euro 2008, Rüştü Reçber, concluded his words by saying:
‘‘I have no intention to respond to the criticisms made about my tournament performance. Everyone knew that it would be my last appearance in the national team. It’s time to move along and let the others wear that holly jersey. I was up and ready for the games physically and mentally way before the tournament got underway. And I think, in general, I had a pretty good tournament. But for now, I am only concerned with Beşiktaş’s success. If I can help my team go all the way this season, I’ll probably be happiest player on the roster. Of course, if the national team wants me again, I‘ll be honored to provide my services. This is Turkey, anything can happen any time, you never know. ’
