Women’s Team Advances to Semifinals

Our Women’s Basketball Team hosted Mersin Büyükşehir Belediyesi at BJK cola Arena in the 3rd and last game of its quarterfinal playoff series and walked away with a thrilling 72 - 67 victory. The win gave Lady Black and White a 3-2 edge in the series and advanced them to semifinals.

The game was hotly contested from start to finish. After Mersin’s Fluker open the scoring with a jumper, the teams traded baskets rest of the way and the first quarter ended in a 15-15 tie. Beşiktaş Cola Turka opened the second quarter with a lay-up by Hayden and tried to gain control but had hard time to contain hot-shooting Ellen James and Tatum J. Brown, as they teamed up to give their club a 38-31 lead at the half.
Sparked by key contributions from Ayşe Dilek Ünivar and Nilay Yiğit, our Ladies in Black and White found their offensive rhythm in the third and began to chip away at the deficit. Then Lovelace tied it up with 4:00 remaining in the quarter. From that moment on, it proved to be back and forth battle between the two teams with the lead changing hands several times, but Zanze converted her free-throws with 38 seconds showing on the clock and pulled Beşiktaş Cola Turka ahead, 51-49, after three quarters of play.
After Şaziye Karslı knocked down a jumper to open the final quarter, Zanze added a long-range 3-pointer to extend the margin to seven at 56-49. But the visitors refused to go away and fought back to level the score at 61-61 midway through the quarter with back-to-back buckets by Tamara Ellen James and Tuğba Palazoğlu. Both teams pushed hard to gain the upper hand in the dying minutes. But Zanze and Şaziye Karslı hit a pair of clutch baskets down the stretch and put the Black and White in front, 68-65, entering the final minute of play. Beşiktaş Cola Turka played great defense in the remaining seconds and withstood a late Mersin comeback to prevail 72-67 in the end.
With this hard-fought victory, our Ladies in Black and White took the best-of-three series 3-2 and will now face Galatasaray in the semifinals.
