Our football team suffered a 2-1 derby defeat to city rivals Fenerbahçe at BJK Inönü Stadium. Our lone goal came from Serdar Özkan in the 74th minute.
The devoted Beşiktaş fans packed the stands for this crucial derby, which was refereed by Yunus Yıldırım, and cheered their team on throughout the entire game.Beşiktaş came out wearing their traditional Black-White jerseys, and following the national anthem, a one-minute pre-game silence was observed in memory of Bafraspor Technical Director Sedat Gezer and Goalkeeper Trainer İsmail Kurt who died in an armed assault last week.
After some anxious early exchanges by both teams, Fenerbahçe drew first blood in the 11th minute on a hot Alex header off a Kazım cross from right flank. The Black and Whites pushed forward for an equalizer but could convert their chances along the way, as the visitors managed to hang onto their 1-0 lead, heading into dressing room at the half.
Beşiktaş brought on Ali Tandoğan for İbrahim Üzülmez at start of second half and turned the heat on Fenerbahçe to restore parity but despite numerous close calls, failed to find the back of the net. Nonetheless, the Black and Whites finally got back on level terms in the 74th minute with a textbook counter-attack breakaway. Goalkeeper Rüştü lobbed the ball to Argentinean Carlos Delgado who sent the ball down the right wing for Ali Tandoğan. Tandoğan saw the run from Serdar Özkan towards the box with a neatly angled pass which the young midfielder was able to meet at full flight. Then Serdar Özkan carried the ball to edge of the visitor’s penalty area and made a right-footed shot across the keeper into the net to make it 1-1. But Alex took advantage of a defensive mistake and scored his second goal of the game to put Fenerbahçe up 2-1 with 10 minutes left on the clock. Beşiktaş technical staff brought on Batuhan Karadeniz in the 85th minute for Serdar Özkan to provide additional scoring punch up front. Unfortunately, this substitution proved to be too little and too late, as the visitors from Kadiköy ran out 2-1 winners in the end.
