The division-leading Beşiktaş Cola Turka maintained its undefeated record by beating Serbian FMP Zeleznik 77-76 at Cola Turka Arena in its 8th ULEP Cup game.
Putting out a starting line up of Kaya Peker, Shumpert, Nicevic, Dalmau and Apodaca, Black and Whites started off hot and jumped out an early lead with consecutive fast-break baskets. Backed by a solid defense that prevented their opponents from getting any open looks, they opened up a 6 point gap midway through the opening quarter. Despite Zeleznik’s lay-ups under the hoop, Beşiktaş Cola Turka continued its offensive surge behind baskets by Dalmau and Nicevic and built a comfortable 24-13 lead at the end of the opening quarter.After Kaya Peker hit back-to-back jumpers to open the second the quarter, Black and Whites took advantage of their opponent’s sloppy play and widened the gap even further. But midway through the quarter, the momentum shifted toward FMP Zeleznik, as the revitalized Serbian side slowly began chipping away at the deficit. Following a late surge that cut Beşiktaş Cola Turka’s double-digit lead to 7 points, the visitors pulled within 2, 39-37, with a minute left in the quarter. And then they leveled the score on late jumper. Nevertheless, Black and Whites received 5 points from Dalmau and Apodaca in the dying seconds to carry a 44-40 edge into their locker room at the half.
Teams traded baskets in the early going of second half until Beşiktaş Cola Turka rallied to stretch its lead to 6 points midway through the quarter. But Zeleznik refused to away and charged back to pull ahead, 55-53, entering the final 2 minutes behind back-to-back buckets. Despite trailing by 4 points late in the quarter, our Black and Whites managed to get back on track with clutch baskets and took a slim 59-57 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
FMP Zleznik opened the final period of play with a three and climbed back on top once again. At the start of this hotly contested quarter, the visitors looked more impressive, as they kept getting easy shots inside and out to remain in front until the latter stages of the game. Unable to find an opening in its opponent’s solid defense, Beşiktaş Cola Turka had trouble getting on the scoreboard and trailed 75-72 with a minute left to play. But the late free throws in kept Black and Whites in the game as they pulled to within 1 in the dying seconds. And a clutch lay-up by Nicevic within 28 seconds showing on the clock put Beşiktaş Cola Turka in front, 76-75, for the first time since the third quarter. Following a timeout, the Serbians evened the score with a free throw by Protic who only made one of his two shots. Then, with only 10 seconds remaining in the game, Apodoca hit a free throw to put Black and Whites ahead, 77-76, and seal the win. With this dramatic victory, Beşiktaş Cola Turka won its 8th game in a row and remained undefeated at the top of its ULEP Cup division.
