Our football team defeated Marseille 2-1 in its 5th Champions League Group match thanks to two superb goals from Tello (27’) and Bobo (88’). With this valuable win Beşiktaş raised its point tally to 6 and carried its qualification hopes into the last game.
The Group A game was played at BJK İnönü Stadium and refereed by Luis Medina Cantalejo from Spanish Football Federation. As usual our devoted fans packed the stands and cheered for their beloved team throughout 90 minutes.Determined to win, Black and Whites stormed out to fast start and immediately applied pressure on visitors’ defense for an early goal. During all this rush, our French player Cisse sustained an injury in the 20th minute and had to be replaced by Koray Avcı. But at the 27th minute mark, Beşiktaş won a free-kick just outside the box and Tello curled a brilliant strike past the helpless French goalkeeper to make it 1-0 for the home side. This goal sent the İnönü crowd wild and Black and Whites managed to hang onto their lead before going to their locker room at the half.
During the early going of the second half both teams displayed a tentative game but visiting Marseille had a slight edge. As a result an unexpected long-range shot by Taiwo in the 65th minute got past our goalkeeper Rüştü Reçber and leveled the score at 1-1. In order to keep its qualification hopes alive Beşiktaş brought in forwards İbrahim Akın and Nobre for midfielders Ricardinho and Serdar Özkan. It seemed Beşiktaş were headed out of the competition. But only two minutes remaining in regulation time, Bobo took a superb Delgado pass and advanced into box to produce the game winning goal with an excellent drive. The last minute attacks by the demoralized visitors did not change the score and Beşiktaş walked way with a 2-1 Champions League victory.
Our team will face Porto on December 11 in its last group match and fight for a win in Portugal to qualify for the next round. It will surely be a thrilling experience.
