The World Is Talking About Beşiktaş

The historical 2-1 victory over Liverpool on a memorable Istanbul evening has attracted great attention all over the football world.

The heartbeat of BJK İnönü Stadium could be heard from a long way off last night… While the thousands of united Turkish fans who were deeply saddened by the loss of lives in recent terrorist attacks screamed out their anger loud, Black Eagles brought down a world giant on its knees on the field and received a few grains of comfort. Last night’s glorious victory and incredible fan support created a festive mood throughout the country today and earned high praise from international football circles.
Beşiktaş Paints Istanbul Red
Beşiktaş’s 2-1 famous win against mighty Liverpool at BJK Inönü Stadium received extensive coverage in the official web site of UEFA. The  ‘‘Buoyant Beşiktaş Paint Istanbul Red,’’ titled article heavily praised our fans and said both teams went into the match desperate for points but Beşiktaş had a brighter start thanks to a 13th- minute goal by Serdar Özkan which was deflected in off Liverpool defender Hyypia.
According to same UEFA article Liverpool was unable to respond to this shocking early goal for along time and the introduction of Yossi Benayoun for additional scoring punch proved to be fruitless because substitute Argentinean Higuain kept the visitors’ defense off balance with his dangerous dribblings and a superb goal by Bobo put the game away sending the home crowd wild.

The article also mentioned that despite Captain Steven Gerrard’s late goal, Liverpool could not equalized the score as Beşiktaş succeeded in pushing the 2005 Champions and 2006 Finalists to the bottom of the group with no win.
Bobo Was Selected as Man of the Match by UEFA
Brazilian Bobo, who finished the game with a goal and assist, was picked as the Man of the Match at the official web site of UEFA. The related article praised his overall performance on the field, in particular, his 82nd minute steal from Liverpool defender Hyypia which ended up as Beşiktaş’s second goal.

English Press in Complete Shock
After Reds’s unexpected 2-1 loss to Beşiktaş, English Press unanimously agreed that Liverpool would probably not qualify for the next stage of Champions League.
The Times stressed that following last night’s result, Liverpool was now on the verge being eliminated and an overall poor performance by the Technical Director Rafael Benitez and his crew placed the team at the bottom of the group. According to same paper, this costly Bosphorus accident combined with previous trashing by Marseilles would certainly affect Liverpool’s future status in their own league.
Under the headline of ‘‘Loose Liverpool Hit Bottom and Face Elimination,’’ The Guardian made a similar comment and revealed  that the city of Istanbul witnessed a real division within the team as the Reds found themselves stuck between their own capacity and elimination.
The Independent reported the defeat in Istanbul brought once mighty Reds closer to elimination and Liverpool now faced a shameful early exit from the Champions League.
Daily Mail likened the result to a special ‘‘Turkey Stew’’ and reminded its readers that this disastrous European upset not only posed a serious threat to Liverpool’s future hopes for qualifying from the group but also placed ‘Rafael’s Reds’ at the bottom of the group with no win so far. According to the paper, English team’s Istanbul dream has now turned into a scary nightmare in which Liverpool are facing imminent elimination from the lucrative European league with any kind of unfavorable score. ‘‘If this ever happened, it surely would go down in history as the greatest shame of Benitez’s career.’’ wrote Daily Mail.
In Daily Telegraph’s sports supplement Liverpool hit the headlines as the ‘‘Bygone Power,’’ and under the caption of ‘‘A Bitter Game,’’ the picture of Steven Gerrard with a sinking look at his face after the final whistle sounded said it all. The paper also emphasized that in the city where they lifted the European Cup in 2005, Reds pushed close to European oblivion by a Turkish side which were better organized in defense, midfield and attack.
Spanish Press: ‘‘The Hell of İnönü’’
Following our historical 2-1 victory over Liverpool the Spanish Press pointed out to the fact that a better organized team and the Hell of İnönü Stadium were too much for the last season’s finalists and made these comments regarding the game:

Marca: ‘‘Beşiktaş made things difficult for the Reds in Istanbul and deserved the victory.’’
As: ‘‘Liverpool have a serious problem. They collided with a solid team and dropped to bottom.’’
El Mundo Deportivo: ‘Beşiktaş did what Liverpool couldn’t. Reds now face an uphill battle to qualify for the next stage.’’
Sport: ‘‘Reds are on the verge of elimination from the Champions League.’’
